Re: What is Your Favorite Quote?

Charles “Charlie” Munger is perhaps best known as the Vice Chairman of the world’s greatest compound interest machine: Berkshire Hathaway, Inc.

In 2007, Charlie Munger gave the commencement address at USC Law School, opening his speech by saying, “Well, no doubt many of you are wondering why the speaker is so old.
Well, the answer is obvious: He hasn’t died yet.”

Another pithy "Mungerism":
“It is remarkable how much long-term advantage people like us (he & Warren Buffett) have gotten by trying to be consistently not stupid, instead of trying to be very intelligent.”

“Get busy living or get busy dying.”
-Stephen King

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.”
-Mark Twain

“It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.”
-Leonardo Da Vinci

To get back to boating quotes...
"Everything on your boat is broken. You just don't know it yet."

Re: What is Your Favorite Quote?

"Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore."
-I've seen this attributed to both Andre Gide and Christopher Columbus

I tend to just shorten it to, "Dare to lose sight of the shore." It's a thought that plagues me, in a good way.

"There is nothing more enticing, disenchanting, and enslaving than the life at sea."
-Joseph Conrad

"The sea is the same as it has been since before men ever went on it in boats."
-Ernest Hemingway

Re: What is Your Favorite Quote?

"Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen nineteen six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds nought and six, result misery"
-- Wilkins Micawber, "David Copperfield," Charles Dickens (1850)

"I don't want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve immortality through not dying."
-- Woody Allen

(And, yeah, if you think about it a bit, both quotes are relevant for cruisers.)

Re: What is Your Favorite Quote?

"All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost."

(...unfortunately lately I'm in the process of discovering that line 3 is just not true...)

"Basically my wife was immature. I'd be at home, in the bath, and she'd come in and sink all my boats." ~ Woody Allen
