I feel sorry for Sterling Hayden because his boat was under 100'. Poor guy, I know he tried.

I know this is an old post, but came across it searching for something else...

You obviously know nothing of Sterling Hayden's upbringing and his struggle with poverty and barely making a living working on the fishing schooner's in Gloucester. I have actually sat down and had one on one conversations with Cap't Fred Hubbard of Gloucester about Hayden. He remembers him well. Hubbard tells many stories...but never a mention was made of Hayden's hypocrisy.
There is nothing whining or hypocritical of Hayden's writing this quote. He is speaking from experiences he has had personally, built upon thousands upon thousands of sea miles. If you would research Hayden's life you would understand the man. He loathed acting. He knew he was not good at it. Yet he took what money it paid him and spent it on boats and other holes to pour money into. Yet he also did not believe in unearned income and never invested a single cent of his earnings and lived life after acting nearly bankrupt and always in debt. Though he hit his stride later in life as a successful author, in his early and acting years his crews and even on Wanderer were made up mostly of a bunch of misfits just like him. Half of them sailed with him for no pay. Spike Africa and his wife Red come to mind. (The President of the Pacific Ocean). Hayden had his masters license in his early 20's. What were you doing in your early 20's? I know I sure could not have done that. He was a man amongst men, yet most just remember his admittedly awful acting or the stories of him during the McCarthy "Commie under every bed" era. If you want to take pot shots at quotes there are plenty you can shoot at, but please, do a little research, and if you still think he's a hypocrite then so be it. However, I sense a bit of hypocrisy in even you. Your location is where? The "Nanny State"... Oh really? Now where might that be? Hmm?.....
