Thinking about it, I didn't do him justice: more than anything he was a phenomenal motivator. Not in the usual "ra ra" coach sense; quite the reverse:

The nearest I ever got was arriving at Los Mochis at midnight, sleeping on the floor in the bus station for a few hours, then doing several laps of what seemed like the entire town, on foot, in the pre-dawn, trying to find the undisclosed unmarked location from which the bus for El Fuerte would soon leave

... where we were to spend a few days before joining other (train-mad) family members on the CHEPE train to Chihuahua (stopping and staying at the bottom of one of the deepest canyons on the way - and that whole trip also, to be honest, was absolutely magical)

I thought Mexico would be a wonderful place to visit, but it far exceeded my expectations, mostly.
