Re: What is Your Favorite Quote?

Seize the day, put no trust in the morrow,

Happy the man, and happy he alone,

He, who can call today his own,

He, who secure within can say,

Tomorrow do thy worst, for I have lived today.

Re: What is Your Favorite Quote?

Come fill the cup,
and in the fire of spring,
the winter garment of repentance fling.
For the bird of time has but a short way to fly,
and lo,
the bird is on the wing.

A few:

"Excess on occasion is exhilarating. It prevents moderation from acquiring the deadening effect of a habit." W. Somerset Maugham

"Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats."
H. L. Mencken

"We are here on Earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different." Kurt Vonnegut

Re: What is Your Favorite Quote?

Winston Churchill:

"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries!

"Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia
in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent
in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture,
sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever
the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives
this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity.
"The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his
absolute property - either as a child, a wife, or a concubine - must
delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has cease to be a great power among men. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers
of the faith: all know how to die but the influence of the religion paralyses
the social development of those who follow it.

"No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund,
Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith."

As one who loves a good debate, and all that associates with it, I can hardly wait for the repies.

You have to remember that Churchill was not universally loved by my fathers generation. He was, in fact dismissed in disgrace after the fiasco at Gallipoli . Many of my fathers generation had very low regard for him, regardless of his leadership through WWII. Some may even say he was despised.

Regardless...I find this an uniquely provocative quote.

Re: What is Your Favorite Quote?

It's a great quote and so true. Provocative or not.

Re: What is Your Favorite Quote?

The denigration of the Islamic religion in a sailing forum is a mistake.
