Smile What Else Do You Do?

As the title says, what else do you do while cruising?

I have many interests, some of which fit well with the cruising lifestyle, diving, surfing and kite surfing for example.
Others which will fit in with cruising but not directly e.g. cycling and climbing.

It would be interesting to see what you do with your "spare" time. Do you fit your cruising to your interests i.e using your boat to visit places relevant to your interests.
Also how do you store the gear etc.

Or is it all about the sailing for you?

Re: What Else Do You Do?

It's all about the sailing and getting away from EVERYTHING else.

Re: What Else Do You Do?

We are very active people and use our vessel as "base camp". We have brought bikes everywhere we go and dingy them to shore. We kept two full size mountain bikes on deck for a year and they are pretty well toast now so we have found there is several full size fold up bikes that will fit below ok and we are going to go that route from now on. There is never a lack of things to do on our cruises, if it starts to get boring-sail on!

Re: What Else Do You Do?

You mean during the spare time I have left each day after spending 26 hours fixing stuff on the boat, searching for parts, eating, and sleeping? Seriously, a lot of time in port is spent doing all the boat stuff that has to be done: fuel, water, shopping, laundry, repairs, mail, bills, etc. Just like at home, there are lots of chores that need to be done. After that our favorite past times include snorkeling when in the tropics, exploring afloat and ashore, get togethers with other boaters, photography, reading, etc.

When living ashore, despite working long hours, I still have plenty of time to play.

Re: What Else Do You Do?

- scuba diving
- strength training
- running
- raising my daughter with my wife
- checking stuff out / exploring
- reading / writing
- sailing the dinghy around

The whole "keep it simple" approach directly impacts how much time you have to do things other than fix the boat. There's no way to reduce maintenance to zero but if you don't have a certain piece of equipment, you won't need to fix it when it breaks.

Words to live by when purchasing something for your boat.

Visit CF...
Follow some Bikini's up n down the beach...
Have a coupla beers...
Wander into town, maybe do some shopping..
Stop off at the 'Local'.. grab a few beers n chew the fat with friends..
Visit CF....
Grab some supper... maybe a few more beers or glass of wine..
Flirt with the girls...
Visit CF....
Wander down to the Rugby club or a dance bar...
Flirt with the girls... have a few beers...

Re: What Else Do You Do?

We always have books, and usually small games such as cribbage and cards. We have played a lot of bridge in the cockpit when we have had another couple with us who like to play as well.

Listening to music isn't an activity, but we usually have it going, especially when we are working.

Cooking and eating count in my book as recreational activities and we do a fair bit of that.

While underway I like to knit or do rope work.

I always have my art box at hand and whatever journal/album I am working on.

I expect for full time cruising the list would grow, but I am sure that these elements would stay at the top of the list, because I enjoy them so much and they are things I can do easily while aboard.

I spend alot of time curled up in the cockpit wrapped up warm just... gazing.

yeah, gazing is a recreational activity too ; -)
