West Coast Vancouver Island - Hot Springs Cove

Hi,
I've started getting organised to do a trip up the West Coast again this summer. One of our stops will be Hot Springs Cove, north of Tofino.
I'd like to get my kids working on a design for one of the boardwalk pieces. Can anyone confirm if the boards are (mostly) cedar 2x8's, 42" long? Any taboo's around starting your board early, or to follow tradition, does it have to be carved while en route?

Thanks!!
Mike

Don't be too envious......I'm going in Fogust!!

Someone out there's gotta know that board size! I've found tons of pics on the web of boaters carving their names, and plenty of blogs talking about it. Just nobody marking down the size.

Going from Victoria I assume you will be going out of Juan de Fuca and heading north. I plan on stopping there in Fogust as well, but it will be on my return trip from Haida Gwai. Up the inside and back down the outside.

Re: West Coast Vancouver Island - Hot Springs Cove

Yes, you're right! ANY day on the boat is better than a day in the office...it'll be a great time.

Correct, I'll be heading up JdF, departing Victoria on the 1st. Then will spend about 5 days on my own in Barkley, before picking up the rest of the family in Tofino. It works really well for us to have my wife drive up with the kids so that we have a car to use on those crappy socked in West Coast days. We use it to go explore the rainforest, etc.

I don't think we'll push much farther north than Cougar Annie's. I want to take my time....

Lancer - I see that you haul at Vector! I keep my dinghy right beside that yard on the old Bosun's docks and keep my boat moored out in Tsehum.

Yes, When we arrived there were nudes in the 3 pools of the hot springs. So my wife and I joined in. People gradually leave and you move down to the next (cooler) pool. So by the time we got to the bottom pool we were alone , then other people had moved in. None of them went nude. So there we were stuck in the bottom pool nude and everyone else wasnt! Of course we had to walk past all to get our clothes . HAHa

That was back in 2009, I have since moved to Ladysmith and hauled out there last year. Heading back to the boat next week from the cold north.

Re: West Coast Vancouver Island - Hot Springs Cove

Well it certainly sounds like a relaxed atmosphere, that sounds very nice. Last time I went to the hot springs @ Liard river it had changed from a narrow plank through a bog, where everyone went nude; to a big board walk, and everyone knew about the place. Of course by then the au natural was forbidden. Back in the day a friend of mine worked with a trapper out that way, told stories of going to the Liard hot springs in during the winter when it was -20F and having to share the pool with the Grizzly bears. Anyway, I'll be putting this place on my list of places to visit when I finish my refit and head south.

The boards from the Royal Vic trip were clearly done in advance. It is all nicely routered.

If you contact the club, they might be able to tell you the dimensions.

I had a crew member who worked for a lumber company. He told my the size, but I do not remember what it was.
