Use Kayak from boat with high freeboard

My boat is a Tashiba-31 which is a double-end sailboat with a high freeboard - in my case almost 5 feet.

Does anyone have a video of someone getting in and out of a kayak from a boat ladder? I'm wondering just how hard that would be.

With my inflatable kayak with a drop stitch inflatable floor that is pretty rigid, it is certainly doable and more stable than the typical hard shell. Sorry no video yet.

You’re looking for a video of someone going swimming off of two boats? We have kayaks and a transom boarding ladder. As Don suggests, it is do-able. Don’t want to bet on staying dry 10 out of 10 tries, though.

It depends on the kayak too. We carry up to four kayaks on board. One of them (mine), I have never flipped and it is so stable I cannot see capsizing it is a problem. Two of them (one my wife's) have almost no form stability, but she and others are able to get in/out from swim steps off the transom -- although sometimes with incident. If you don't mind putting your feet in the water and have a step a few inches below the waterline, it serves as a good way to get in/out of the kayak instead of having a big step up/down.

Camper Nicholson 58. Very high sides. It’s a gymnastic event to do this dry. Not for the elderly or infirm

I did it on my last boat. It is balance. Only step in the center, and never push to the side. But it aint' easy when there are waves. In that case, you need a multihull.

Ah, I dunno, I do it all the time, stepping up to a ladder from my inflatable kayak. It is a white water expedition model, big tubes, firm floor, I don't get wet.

We use a double folding kayak for our dinghy on a 30' Sailboat. It can be assembled on the foredeck and is stable enough for us to get in and out from our rope ladder. The old folding kayaks are super stable with inflatable sponsons. The nice thing is that the two bags fit perfectly in our engine room so it is out of the way until we want to explore "thin" water.

Did it with my last boat, no problem with the right kayak, a little tricky with a sea kayak though. Old school folding kayak or a beamy rec kayak with a big cockpit would be easiest. I would think an inflatable kayak would be pretty easy to board too, but not so easy to paddle in a windy anchorage.

it's harder to go from a dinghy to a kayak. as stated earlier, putting your weight on the centerline of the kayak is key. this is more easily done from a point higher than the kayak. also important is the stability of the platform your are stepping off. a dinghy gives you neither relative height nor great stability (with obvious differences between types of dinghy).

I would keep the kayak for fun and buy a small inflatable yoyo for getting in and out in any conditions.


I say this as SHOULD YOU SLIP you get to make a small challenge a big one - now how to get out of the water onto that high topsides deck ??? !!!



You can convert any soft bottom yoyo into a much more stable craft by simply adding some plywood floors. Changes the whole game beyond description.

One dinghy-to-kayak trick is to put a paddle across and sort of slide.
