Those Who Sail Nude...

I used to live in an area near a nude beach and it was common to see people sailing nude in the area, although not in the marina areas. I have also seen a few who would sail nude in the Southern Calif. area. In some sailing magizines there are occasional articles about someone finding nude sailors in the Med. Or Caribbean.
What is the general consensus of the boating public on this?

I think nude sailing is a fine idea! We have taken extra precautions to remove all sharp edges or anything else that might not be compatible with bare skin.

Do people actually sail with clothing on when away from the marina??? I mean in any reasonable warm place... I'd probably not in the Arctic.

Actually most people attempt not to be what could be called exhibitionist but the line is not firmly set. Comfort is king. Limits do exist as far as exposure and too much sun is not a comfortable thing short or long term. Most would rather not offend anyone but if your sailing into a mooring where most or some of the people appear nude... do not expect them to cover up just for you...

In the Carib you generally will not see significant open nudity in large mooring fields but while sailing it is very common and generally accepted in a European style...

Don't expect to see many center fold types... just comfortable "real" people.

I find doing anything remotely physical, other than sex, to be very uncomfortable in the nude. I wouldn't want to whack my member on a shroud as I scampered forward or to sit on it as I plop down to attend to an anchor. I'd find myself having to spend more time trying to keep my penis out of the way than getting things done. I guess I could do what the bush men do and wrap it in some kind of enclosure and tie it up to my waist. Naw, I think I'll stick to wearing shorts and bathing suits.

I have spent over 25 years in the USN flying surveillance flights over the Med and Carib. And we see lots of sailors (male and female) in the nude. My only advice is this: remember your picture will end up on some wall, some where to be to be admired. So if your shy cover up when you here the aircraft engines approaching.

Sail nude!? I've got enough problems with the dermatologist burning cancers off of my arms, head, and hands I don't need him squirting liquid ntrogen over my "private parts" or God forbid lopping off an inch or two! Won't be much left.

My friend who runs catamaran tours in Negril, Jamaica has some nude cruises. Like another poster said, just everyday folks. Ditto the sunblock comment.

I tried it once and the results were disasterous. Sailors screaming "I'm blind, I'm blind" while trashing around their decks with some falling overboard. I still have nightmares.

Thumbs up

I gotta tell ya, nudity won't bother me any. I was on the nude beach when I saw those sailing nude. I am in the San Francisco area now and liberal as it is here, it's just too cold most times for that type of recreation. I was mainly interested in how wide spread it is in the sailing world. I am aware of the nude crusies, and that there are no, or damn few model types, just the same folks you see at the local groceries.

Like most things worth enjoying, moderation heightens your appreciation and while tailing a winch, watching Uranus scribe across the horizon is not my idea of bliss!

"whack my member on a shroud as I scampered forward"

Now that's funny as hell. I was trying to remember when was the last time I scampered anywhere. Oh... and the whack my member part was funny too.
Honestly, what a crack up. I may have to use your line. I'll pay you off in beer if ever we should meet.
