The hammock
Are there any creative alternatives for hanging a hammock other than between the mast and forward stay? That is, alternatives you've tried. Not that some theory couldn't be helpful. Thanks, all.

Re: The hammock
We hang a hammock chair off the end of the boom, over the water. I use a prevent to keep the boom swung out as far as possible.
I've also seen people attach one end of a hammock to the front of the mast and the other to a spin/whisker pole out over the forward quarter.

Re: The hammock
My aft cabin eight feel long, just long enough to hang a traditional canval hammock. I have stainless steel hooks mounted through the aft bulkhead and forward through the bulkhead into the cockpit. It works well in the summer with a box fan to keep cool.

Re: The hammock
We built a Bimini just for is. Hammocks go from back of boom to Bimini, and we simply don't use main if it would interfere.

Re: hammock chair
Hannabel - I think I have a picture of your hammock chair. Is it the one with the drink cooler? Are you able to get out and back by yourself or does someone have to maneuver you out there? I have one of these and think this might be very interesting in a calm sail. Or is it a lot of work?

I have to know more about this over-the-water hammock setup.
And on a similar note, how/where do you guys do pull-ups? Hanging things without causing damage is on my mind.

It's a two-person job to get into the chair and then get positioned over the water, but once in place, it's a great place to read/nap/relax. We've only ever done it while at anchor. Probably not a good idea while under sail!
It ends up looking something like this:

Re: The hammock
Cant think of a more uncomfortable night spent than in hammocks. Best place for it? Dumpster!

That does look a little...cramped. What if you used the pole like that and the forward stay and draped it a bit more gingerly? Or I wonder if it'd be pretty unstable then. I guess I'm not going to hurt anything and could just play around with it.

Obviously an inexperienced hammock victim. Try a matrimonial hammock from yucatan mexico, with nylon es major!!! You will never go back to your posturpedic if you do!!!!

Re: The hammock
I slept in a hammock for three months on a seismic survey boat once.
I would often wake up after six or seven hours and still be in the same position. That never happens to me lying on a mattress.
IF you know how to do it, it's some of the most comfortable sleeping imaginable. There are techniques for both types of hammocks, those with the spreaders and the normal mayan style ones. That one in the photos over the side of the boat is not a hammock, that's a hammock chair. Different animal entirely.

Re: The hammock
We have, under sail, had the kids out on the hammock over the water while attached to the boom whilst running (with preventer on, of course)! He'll, the reasoning being that even if they fall off, they can swim!

I-can-always-swim logic always applies.
