I go there all the time. But a lot of people are afraid of the depths. I just say "Welcome to Texas" lol

Re: Texas Cruisers Forum Meetup

The question is, do we want a drive-up location, or a sail-in location. Those with trailerboats don't care. Others have to plan a lot more. If we settled on G. Bay, would the RainDog crew even come with the boat? You'd have to plan a week.

Most likely we would not come with the boat if it was Galveston, but maybe if we could find a cheap slip for a week or two.

You could anchor free and dingy in to my boat. MDS won't mind at all

Army Hole is probably not a good idea, if draft is an issue. We had friends with a 6'- boat have some minor issues. We are 6'5".

Matagorda is just fine. The city marina has great depth, and there is a world-class restaurant in town (they will pick you up). Spoonbills.

In any case, we're in if it works out - probably anything but Galveston/Houston/Kemah. by boat. We have plenty of places to stay with friends.

Matagorda makes the most sense, right in the middle. But we also have to do a flower garden trip. Maybe when the hammer heads gather, I think that's in June? I'll check.

Re: Texas Cruisers Forum Meetup

Since I do not own a boat, I'll just have to drive down from the DFW metroplex. I'll wait on the side, until you guys decide on a meeting place that is not far from a Holiday Inn or a Marriott. Search away!

How realistic is a Flower Garden trip? (Not for this meet up]. I'd so love to go out there, but a little afraid of just sitting 100 miles offshore. Have other smallish sailboats done it?

Re: Texas Cruisers Forum Meetup

I agree not for this meetup, but it would be fun to plan a trip. Stetson Bank is only ~70 miles from Galveston Jetties. It should be easy to get out there, spend a night or two there, and get back within a pretty good forecast window. Getting out there would be the problem. Getting home would sure be easy.

I've been out there before for two nights on a 46' boat. Flat calm seas, but the swell was rocking the boat. We also had a 2kt current running.

After looking at the map...DFW to Metagorda...hummm...a bit of a drive; I'll skip it. If the meeting is in the Galveston/Kemah area, I'll attend it.

If you look at the Galveston Yacht basin you will see a lot of slips empty by West road. If you see the seawall that is in the protected area with the covered power noats, you can drop a hook just on the otherside of the wall. 10 -12 feet deep an bigger than several football fields. Look on google maps of sat view. The slips on west road are mostly rented, 275 month for 36 foot, there may be 1 or 2 but the transit dock is empty, can hold up to 100 foot boat on Tee head. VOTE!!!! Galveston!!!! Come see the Gardens! have a good one

Re: Texas Cruisers Forum Meetup

Looks like we are of two minds, so Gordo suggested two events for twice the fun. We will do on in the Galveston Bay area and one in the Port Aransas area. Everyone is welcome to either or both.

I will host the Port Aransas event Memorial Day weekend. Details to follow. If you would like to attend, and have ideas of what you would like to do or when you will be available, please let me know. If most people will have boats, we will mostly anchor out. If most people will not have boats, we will be sure to do lots of land activities and day sails.

I'll host the one in Galveston Bay area. I'm thinking a long get together at T- Bone Tom's on a Friday night, followed by Saturday sailing. Those that have boats in the area can host those that do not for a day sail on the bay and we could all meet up for a late lunch At one of the many water accessible restaurants. I'm thinking March, but after Spring break, or early April.
