Looks like Phil's nearly home. Nice conditions for a lazy motorsail North. Cascais is just too nice to pass up. The tactic for heading North along the Portugal coast is usually early starts before the wind picks up around lunchtime, then heading into harbour around beer o'clock

Just spoke with boatie. He took a long walk this morning to get some fuel filters because engine running and choking.... gummed up. Another job, tank cleaning, supposedly having been done but not.........

Got engine running beautifully and then the water pump decided to reroute the water out the back of the gasket.

So he is going back to get another gasket.

Phil taught me a whole heap of cuss words I didnt know...........

The good news is, I passed a job on to him which looks like is acceptable to the boat owner.......

Everyone's to busy so looks like another DIY job

I'm guessing water pump">raw water pump?

I use a wooden dowel to remove the seals and a socket that fits the outer rim to reseat. I also replaced the flat head screws with Allen head.

Presumably a rubber type impeller in a brass/bronze pump chamber! If so here are a couple of hints.
Go carefully while undoing the screws, they are often corroded and break easily. Penetrating fluids (like diesel) are your friends, resort to heat only if necessary.
Remove old impeller with lock pliers (visegrips etc), not screwdrivers or other levers .

The shaft seal nearest the impeller is the most important one and you need to check the surface of the shaft very carefully as it is often worn where the seal is.
Clean the surface of the shaft at this point carefully. I used toothpaste and a soft cloth, it took a while to remove remmants of the old seal. Some use fine emery or Scotch Brite but I would avoid that if possible. Too rough IMHO.

There is a right way and a wrong way to fit the seal. The open part of the seal should face towards the pump chamber (ie the impeller). This seal will usually have a garter spring that helps to keep the seal surface against the shaft. In a water seal, this garter spring will be stainless steel but in an oil seal, the spring will be carbon steel. Your new seal should be a water seal, not a oil seal but sometimes you end up with an oil seal which clearly is not so good. If that is all you can get, pop off the carbon steel spring and fit an O ring in its place. I had to do this last week, no water seals were availabe in the whole of Tassie

Best thing to lubricate the new impeller when refitting is glycerine.

Polish the inside of the pump chamber with very very fine emery paper. I like 800 or finer wet and dry, used wet.

Use new screws for assembley if you can get them.

Straighforward job really, you will be an old hand at it soon

Pump is in bits.. need new seal and O ring.. trouble is none in Portugal so now have to sit and wait till the bits get here from the UK or Stateside..
And only 96 miles to base... Arrggghhhhh

Even Portugal must have a generic bearing and seal outlet.

For instance, last week I went to Yanmar to get impeller and seals for my pump. The impeller they reckon was the right one was wrong and they had no seals.

So I went to the state Johnson pump distributor. They had an impeller but no seals. The seals had to be imported .

I then went two doors down to the local bearing and seal supplier and they had the O rings and seals I needed, off the shelf. Took them less than 1 minute to look at the old seals and find replacements off the shelf. Admittedly they only had oil seals, not water seals but they just did the "O ring Trick" mentioned above and converted the oil seal into a water seal - again took less than a minute.

Put that beer down and hustle some more
