Reckon some redesign of the emergency steering will in order once you are home

Gotta say this is starting to sound like a delivery job but I'm sure you are enjoying it a tiny bit better - except for the bludi dock wallopers

I once had to steer a boat between 2 islands on a delivery using only vice grips on the spindle as the wheel was missing!

who needs a wheel anyway when you've got vice grips...........

In reading Boaties story, it reminded me of some lessons I learned from my youth when working with the older guys, men who in their 60s and 70s had experienced life and were masters of their respective trades. One guy in particular, Frank was a metal founder. He had his own business making ornamental fittings for the Pub trade. Beautiful work. He was known to be a little more expensive than others in the exclusive field. Other founders products looked in the main just as nice, yet Pub chains would contract Frank time after time.

I asked him about it. He filled his pipe and said " Everyone thinks manufacture is about making the item. It is....... but then there is the support for the item, Then the quality of the threads holding the item, then there is the ability to remove the item easily if necessary, then there is the item that has an electric cable or a water pipe going to it or through it......... are the edges protected.."

From him I learned that everything has a 2 ends and a middle. You CANNOT fix one end of a system without checking the whole system right through to the other end. If he had been a mechanic doing the hydraulic repair on Phils boat, I can GUARANTEE he would have found the nut issue on the wheel or been aware that it was time to change it because of the metals used. He would have gone through the hydraulics inch by inch and fixed it first time. Its disappointing when the experts we hire dont have the same mindset.

From him I learned in my medical training to take nothing for granted and check each patient thoroughly regardless of their primary complaint and find the real cause of the problem.

We do our best. I do miss the time where money was not our primary target about doing our jobs and the job was the focus of attention to get it right.

This shakedown cruise of boaties has brought out all the weakness of the previous fittings, and once replaced, he will have a great steel boat. Its safe sturdy and seaworthy.

Great first part of the trip Phil. Its not always about keeping a schedule, its about overcoming what obstacles occur on the journey.

"it's about overcoming whatever obstacles occur during the journey." I couldn't agree more, and I could wish the newbies would really take a look at this thread. Subjects covered:

*Wind strengths and appropriate action

*What to do when the steering wheel comes off in your hands --besides whine and curse

*What do when the main "unszips" itself. How many spare slides do you carry? What condition are the other sails in?

*How to arrive safe and sound at your destination.

This is all matter of fact for Boatman 61, but others can benefit from understanding his strategies.

not sure how long you plan on being at club nautico,but something to bear in mind is prices double on the 1st of june,then triple 1 july!

Cartagena and aguadulce,are fairly reasonably priced all year round

I like those twin helms....you have the skippers wheel...and the training wheel for crew who can't steer a straight course

Heading off today.. don't know the next stop but likely somewhere between Andratx and Almerimar.. depends how good the string is
Ann.. the sail slides were 15's.. now upgraded to 19's..
She's a great boat really just had money spent on the wrong stuff.. not the serious working gear.
Another thing you guys should make sure off is you have winch handles that lock in when in place.. they jump out to easily in heavy seas and winches crack ribs when one nipple kisses them..
So.. now its a wander to the Ferrateria to try for another nut for the helm.. if this one also does not work I'll super glue the best make do onto it and see what happens.. My ancient Auto helm 3000 is tied on with string so one could say it'll be a technilogical improvement..
