Re: spot the boatman!

Looks like he'll have single digit wind speeds until he arrives.

Just a shame Spot is useless and does not show his speed.

Based on the forecast I'm seeing, the heavy stuff will be well north of him more level with Corsica. He would get good winds.

If only the weather would behave exactly how your favourite weather forecasting model predicts :-)

Wait a minute. He jumped suddenly from:

Latitude : 39.05904
Longitude :9.58653
Time :
April 25, 2015 at 2:56:40 AM PDT

to:

Latitude : 39.20536
Longitude : 9.30244
April 25, 2015 at 8:21:26 AM PDT

Is that right, or did a copter pull him in?

He has a couple of days of good weather, so I wonder if he will sail the 60nm to Carloforte. Well sheltered harbour from the look of it (except with an easterly)

pirate Re: spot the boatman!

Well... the last 3 days have been fun.. left Mazara with a forecast 4-5 and ended up with a 7 gusting to 8 as we passed between the islands of SW Sicily.. the following morning the tiller arm for the hydraulic steering fell off and I discovered the emergency steering was useless.. the rod is to long so the tiller can only be moved 10 degrees either way before hitting the backstays... Duhhhh..
So hove to till the wind and sea's eased a bit.. one mashed forefinger, a fair bit of blood and swearing later I managed to get it back on and continued to Sardinia.. 3 miles out the steering failed completely.. an hours conversation with the Italian authorities on the VHF finally resulted in a nice guy taking pity and showing up from the marina in his motorboat and towed me in.. Phew.
So... Monday morning I find out whats what and if its 1 arm and a leg.. or both..
Signing off from Port Capitana, Sardinia.

Its turning into a definite Love-Hate relationship... you love it.. and I'm starting to hate it..
Gonna look into having her lifted and stored here for the summer.. got a contract to honour.. and much needed cash to be earned to pay for it.. starting May 15th when I have to be in Miami to bring a boat across to Gibraltar.
I think its the steering head manual pump thats died this time.. either that or the Dutch cowboy in Malta that re-did the ram seals etc cocked up badly..
Can however strongly recommend the Sicilian mechanic in Mazara do Velo.. Nino Anistasi.. did an excellent job.
Ahh well... fill you in later guys.

Could be worse- Could be my boat.

However Phil, the bright side is that you know that the main area of concern is to do with the steering and most other systems are working well. Fix that and all will be well. Life eh?

The other good thing about this is that you will get chance to hook up with Mr and Mrs Kenomac when you return.
