With the right sea motion, it can take all of the effort out of sex.

looking at the wind and wave forecasts, it looks like he is running with them. It looks to me (I'm totally clueless and hope boaty chips in later about this) that if he sailed direct to the bottom of Sardinia he would eventually get hit by wind on the nose pushing him down to Africa. Going more north will take him to more favourable winds for him to sail back south to the bottom sicily.
