I give a lot of credit to Boaty on this one. It's not everyday one man and his imaginary dog can survive over the stress of such a busy coast and strange sea as this part of the med.

I belive street artists are already using his likeness for urban graffiti....................in honour of his swinging poi balls,and budgie smugglers, he is a living legend in his own lunch time on the beaches of southern Portugal.......since his youtube video got a virus

Hey Guys n Gals.. enjoyed the comments.. now for the update..
Those who guessed engine problems get the cuddly toy...
Left Palma midday and headed for S tip of Formentera as the Strait between Ibiza and Denier can be a bitch of a sea.. head winds so motorsailed with main and made good time.. around 2am as I passed Formentera the engine died.. assumed it was fuel and resolved to use less rev's as 170litres in that space of time seemed a bit greedy.. but lightish winds so hove to and got my head down.. woke around 8am to find a convoy of fish farms being towed to the islands in my path and wind to light to risk ducking and diving through them so drifted N for a few hours till they passed then headed S... anyway while I'm drifting I emptied 2 fuel drums into the tank then went to check the levels.. full tank..??
STRANGE...!! strated the engine first go.. Yippee..!!
Put her in gear and its screaming.. Buga.. fan belt slipping.. nope thats good.. then notice a pool of gear oil under the engine..
Its the gear box.. as I was running the engine with the cover off the healthy roar of a 60hp tractor engine drowned out the noises of complaint from a dry box.. so engine off.. raise sails and head due S.. did not fancy Barcelona this time..
Got down to level with Cartagena when some nice N'lies sprung up so dropped the main and let the gennie right out and ran with them.. about level with Garucha and some 50miles from Cabo de Gato the winds upped a couple of gears and Biggles (my aged AP) lost the ability to cope so undid the string.. removed the belt and took over.. 12hours later I'm just past the Cabo.. flattish sea's but the winds screaming and I,m buggered so furl the sail and let her drift for 4 hrs while I curled up and died..
7am everythings died down and I'm crawling toward Almerimar at 1knot.. and 28miles to go.. to slow for Biggles so its live in the wheel world again...
Halfway across the bay the wind went W.. and strong..
Put in a couple of tacks and the last on got me to 3miles off Roquettas.. I'd had enough so called up Agua Dulce for a berth.. waiting pontoon full but can come in and go straight to a berth if I want.. then I told em 'no engine'... So Sorry.. no can help Bye Bye was the reply... which I kinda expected having been there 3 winters in the past.. nice marina but limited manouvering space if engineless.. so about face till level with both headlands.. heave to and bed time..
Woke Sat morning to light W'lies so got going again.. then it swung E.. great stuff.. broad reach to Almerimar..
Had to crank the engine to get in.. awfull sound.. but we got in..
Got hold off Frank the areas German Engine god.. he crawled into the bowels and emerged to inform me the gearbox is bugga'd..
So this time its 2K for a new box plus labour and marina fee's..
The good news.. high season for a 40ftr.. 21.50 euro/day.. I was paying 35/day off season in Sardinia.. and Sicily.. so my worlds not black after all.. just a very dark grey..
Oh.. have decided to change the boats name.. used to own a boat called Deep Water of Cowes... so thinking maybe 'Deep **** off Almeria'.. or maybe 'The Bank Breaker'...
Be here around 10days I reckon.. no plate on the box so Franks gonna have to calculate the reduction before he can send off for a new box.. if repairable he reckoned around 1500euro or go for a new one at 2K.. figure new is the best option but will decide for sure tomorrow when he takes it out.. be interesting to see why the lost oil..
This was another Whitesails of Malta job.. theyed had the box out and checked it over for the PO before I got there.. bloody Dutch cowboy.. fooked hydraulics to start.. now a fooked gearbox..
Plus.. the PO got her hauled and painted at Kalaka B'yard last autumn.. supposedly AF'd as well.. reckon all thats down there is black undercoat the way the barnacles are growing.. no wonder he wanted rid.. he was getting screwed left, right and centre..
So.. on short rations of 1-2beers a day till the 10th when this months small stipend hits my account.. but I can get John Smiths here.. escape the 'Blonde' crap a while.. real beer not gnats piss..
So.. still only a dark grey world..
