Okay... here the innards of the pump in all their glory.. and my work station.. all is back together and just needs fresh oil and bleeding and she's good to go...
Question.. cleaned everything then gave a liberal spray of WD40 to the bits as they went back in.. can the system be left empty or is it advisable to at least make a start and get some oil into the system to keep the innards lube'd..?

I vote for the oil or some other pickling. The WD40 is good for removing moisture, but is not a lubricant nor a long term solution. Other banana lovers may have a different opinion.

Hello Boatman,

Likely there is a fuel station nearby. They should have a selection of chain lubes in aerosol, like that: Chain Lube Aerosol

Just spray the innards, assemble and the pump should be well protected till you return.

Wish you more luck than I had.

Cheers guys.. had a feeling that may be the case but thought I'd chuck it out there anyway.. will get the appropriate oil tomorrow and get the process started and leave the final bleeding till I get back next week...
Got a call earlier.. the Miami job has been cancelled.. unforseen disaster to the boat.. so I'm up for a short notice delivery in June...

Re: spot the boatman!

Phil, have you flushed the lines? You said there was metal crap left from the work done earlier and I'm wondering if that could have gotten into the lines. I know you have cleaned the pump and the drive cylinder.

Poured 10/40 engine oil down them.. with the bottom ends taped closed to sit while I worked.. then let them drain and drip dry overnight into a bucket..

Re: spot the boatman!

Hydraulic systems require hydraulic oil. Grease might cause issues with valves and o-rings plus allow shavings or other contaminants to lodge in lines and cause issues later.

Use compressed air w/ a white rag loosely over the open end of your lines until you don't see any more grit.

The number 1 issue with hydraulics is or starts with contaminated fluid.

Looking for another pretty place to work on the boat.

Re: spot the boatman!

WD40 has an effect on natural rubber. Beware also polycarbonate and clear polystyrene.

Re: spot the boatman!

Yes I think it would be best to stick with hydraulic fluid in your lines and to coat the parts until you fill the system.
