Spearfishing in Mexico?

I got my Mexico fishing license, but it does not mention Spearfishing. Is it legal to have a spear gun in Mexico? Pole spear?

Re: Spearfishing in Mexico?

Underwater fishing is limited to five fish per day, using rubber band or spring type harpoons, and only while free-diving.

Here are the regulations:

A member must have a valid individual fishing permit.
And must be in good conditions to practice this sport.
The underwater fishing will be performed swimming or freediving only.
A member should mark its position with a red/orange clearly visible buoy and carry a knife as a security tool.
It is prohibited to tie up the speargun line to any body part.
A member does not load or keep the speargun loaded out of the water, on land or aboard a boat.
As fishing gear only spearguns with bands or slings are allowed.
No spearfishing in protected areas.
It is prohibited to capture non authorized species.
It is not allowed to commercialize any of the catches
It is not allowed to tie up your captures to the body.
It is strictly prohibited to spearfish any mammal or seabird.
Respect seasons and minimum sizes per specie.
It is strictly prohibited to use fishing nets to practice spearfishing.
It is prohibited to fillet the catches aboard a boat.
The fishing should be done within the laws and regulations of the waters a member is in.
The use of artificial lights and night fishing are not allowed.
Maintain an appropriate distance within another boat of at least 200 meters.
The use of explosive tips or gas is not allowed.
It is obligatory to always work in couples as spearfishing implies a risk to the life of those who practice it.
Members must carry a first aid kit.
Spearfishing must abide to the Mexican laws and rules about on the matter (Fishing law, Regulation of fishing law NOM-017-PESC-1994).

Re: Spearfishing in Mexico?

mexican fishing rules are specific. you will get license and you will follow rules or there are poaching consequences involving mexican prisons. yes they even arrest their own navy personnel who poach. watched that. it was most enlightening.
be sure to follow all rules and laws to the letter. your fishing license will have those written.
if you are not a sportsfisher you are allowed to fillet catch to eat. if sportsfisher you NEED to fillet at the dock.

Re: Spearfishing in Mexico?

Yes, as I said, I have gotten the license. Nowhere in the regulations that came with the license does it mention spearfishing.

because we as visitors are not allowed to do that exercise in cheat fishing. must only use rod n reel and line and hook or handline. there is an issue with overfishing these waters. the fishies have been sparse for a few years.
it used to be mentioned on the license just a few short years ago before change of administration to nieto.

Re: Spearfishing in Mexico?

As you are in Mexico, are you saying spearfishing is illegal, or only pneumatic spear guns?
