I look at it this way

The turistas that frquent the kitschy tiki bars are looking for the Island Ambience...I don't begrudge them that.....Whether it is Jimmy Buffet or Oil Drum Bands....with their unintelligible wailing....it all gets old....ah...the price we pay for being sailors

Well... Not a fan of Jimmy Buffet. However, "A Pirate Looks at Fourty" by Jimmy is a fantastic song. . That isn't the studio version, but all I could find.

We also have a "best of" mix we made that's from all the Great Big Sea albums.

. (excuse the weird video, only one I could find).

Aside from that sort of stuff, reggae reggae reggae, a huge selection.

We usually just trade our entire library with others. A good way to accumulate tons of good tunes!

Cheers

Alison Krauss does a lovely cover of the old Foundations hit "Baby, Now that I've Found You"

JB has a couple of good tracks, but quite a few more that are quite.... average (to put it politely).

Also, I'm sure a lot of people don't listen to him because of his reputation as a huge sell out:

Chris Rea has some great "water" mood songs. On the Beach, Sail Away, Tamatave, Gone Fishin' and King of the Beach come to mind. Great Big Sea, a Celtic-Folk-rock band from New Foundland has some great stuff, Sea of No Cares, A Boat Like Gideon Brown, Captain Kidd, French Perfume, Donkey Riding, Yarmouth Town, and of course the song that inspired my Nom de Plume, Jack Hinks. Paul Brady's Crazy Dreams, Hawana, Lakes of Ponchartrain. Jimmy B of course, my favorite song of his: Coast of Marseilles and Nautical Wheelers. CSN, Taylor, Warren Zevon's Mutineer. Moody Blues Driftwood, Sur La Mer CD. The Dicey Doh Singers (from the Bahamas) their version of Sloop John B is great. Chesapeake Born and Dredgin' is Drudgery by Tom and Mark Wisner. Oceans Away by Roger Daltrey. Poco's Magnolia, Keep on Tryin', Barbados. Beach Boys' California Saga (Water, Water...Get yourself in the cool clear water), Steamboat, Don't Go Near the Water, I can hear music, Cool Cool Water, Heroes and Villains, Good Vibrations, Sloop John B, Sail on Sailor. Check out Brian Wilson's Imagination, South Americana and Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blues, Rainbows, River Song. All good water music. Oh, and from Down Under, don't forget LRB's Cool Change, Seine City. I once was fishing off Lizard Island and the Great Barrier Reef and the mate of the boat, said, "Let's put on some "Marlin Music and he cranked up a singer with a great voice & attitude, Jimmy Barnes, kinda the Australian version of Mellencamp, the Aussie said. He has some great stuff too.

I prefer most music by Jack Johnson and some new guys: Ray Lamontagne and Amos Lee. Check them out on youtube if you get a chance. Very laid back.
