Songs To Sail By

When contemplating selling all my stuff and moving onto a boat, one of my worries was how to take my music with me. Now that we have it all digitized on about 80 Gig of hard drive the problem had gone away. I can take it all.

The first song I learned to play on the guitar was Lightfoot’s “Christian Island”.

“Barrett’s Privateers” is the story of what happens when Nova Scotians, in a get rich quick scheme, try to be pirates. A more accurate description of Canadian pirates is probably “The Last Saskatchewan Pirate” by the Arrogant Worms.

In terms of “Sailing Songs”, I submit the following list from two of my favourite singer song writers.

Jimmy is ok, but I have really come more to associate his music with tourist traps and cruise ship type 'adventures'.



The best I know of is Eileen Quinn Her music makes much more sense to cruisers, and has much less to do with chain restaurants.

Eileen is our favorite also. I swear she has been a stowaway on our boat because the songs really hit home (probably because she is an experienced cruiser). She has given many concerts at Annapolis, Georgetown Bahamas etc and is even more fun in person.

First song I learned to play was Song For a Winter's Night. (Good sailing song for Thunder Bay)

Anything by Sublime. (New boat Name)

Sublime was a band that Bradley Nowell R.I.P. founded in the eighties. He went on a sailing trip with his father to the Bahamas, was introduced to Reggae music, and the rest is history.

Thanks for the introduction to Eileen Quinn. I have almost 7000 songs on my iPod but I see a few more albums to be added soon. And there definately is Buffett and lots of Reggae along with some steel drum. Cool Running soundtrack is good for sailing too.

This is the most amazing fun!! Loading my relatively new-to-me ipod from a freebie download site I've come across this incredible musical genre called "Country"!!

It would take a cold heart indeed not to be moved by the sentiments expressed in tracks such as "Aint drinkin' Any mo'", "Letters from Home" (a real weepie, that one) and "She taught me how to yodel".

The True Meaning of Life is explored in such eloquently penned lyrics as "There aint no trash in my trailer (since I kicked you out)" and "Chicken Fried" and, my personal favourite, "She shot my hoss and kicked my dawg, but I still love her".

I'm still very new at this so cannot understand some lyrics; indeed some seem to be written in a foreign language. "There's a skeeter on my peter, wack it off" is, maybe, too advanced me. Translation, anyone?
