Re: Songs To Sail By
Last I remember playing while at sea was Steve Hillages' version of Hurdy Gurdy Man from "L". Othervise, the obscure and overlooked Canadian group "Klaatu" has produced some arch-maritime stuff like "Sir Bodsworth Rugglesby III" from 3-47 E.S.T. Oh, Deep Purples "Sail Away" from "Burn". Then there's all of Zappas "Sleep Dirt" album, the instrumental version, which haunting music for me invariably produce a strong yearning for The Big Blue and much contentment when I'm there (most would probably beg to differ, in more or less civil tones... like a certain harbour chief. )

Put your headphones on
Lay down
Turn off the lights
And listen to this song.

Re: Songs To Sail By
This thread is DANGEROUS. I just spent all night at work downloading music until I got hung up on Chris Rea! I probably spent more than I made but I got some great tunes. Thanks to all of you.

Re: Songs To Sail By
Frankly, some of y'all need some, well, acculturation... and since my post would just be way long, please just click/paste the links:
Rod Stewart's (-cough-) version of "Sailing" is a cover of a pretty damn good ROBIN TROWER song:
Trower's "Sail On" is even better:
I think TOOTS AND THE MAYTALS was mentioned. Their "Sailing On" is, like all their stuff, awesome!
Want some jam? Have some slide guitar.
Here's THE DEREK TRUCKS BAND covering the T&M's "Sailing On."
Just get DTB's SONGLINES album...and while at it, get ALREADY FREE a taste:
Like DTB? SONNY LANDRETH is The God Of Slide. His "Port of Calling":
New children on the block, ROBERT RANDOLPH AND THE FAMILY BAND Are you "Going in the Right Direction"?
Speaking of island music...
Ever heard of Crucian Scratch Music?
TEN SLEEPLESS KNIGHTS
BLINKY AND THE ROADMASTERS, who did "Caroline" (no vid available) on the soundtrack to CAPTAIN RON
Reggae/soca/dancehall
SHAGGY
BUSY SIGNAL
TARRUS RILEY
T.O.K.
APACHE INDIAN (get the "Time for Change" album)

Re: Songs To Sail By
Errr.. seeing this thread has morphed into "what music is great exept for funeral settings" then this one must be added - guitarissimo fireworks-onna-stick (well 3 actually).
This, er, "tune" may be constued to be a bit maritime; it goes from dead calm... to a breeze... fresh gale... force 12. Whew.

I can remember playing Beatles very load one evening crossing the Bay of Biscay. A huge pod if dolphins came by to check out what was making the noise. Lovely memory.
