Similar Book as Zen and Motorcycles Maintenance about Sailing ?

Hello all,

Would anyone happen to know is there a book which would look into sailing and traveling in same logical and philosophical manor as this Robert M. Prisings classic on motorcycles. Im now in a process of reading this classic again and remembered how much it gave me on my motorcycle travels around Europe, Alps curvy roads and mind numming autobans in Germany.

I think in this forum there are many of you who have read good sailing books and would love to hear from them.

Thank you in advance

Pirsig also wrote a book called Lila that was similiar but expounded upon Zen and it takes place on a sailboat.

What? You are reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance AGAIN and you don't' realize it IS about sailing? Pirsig works metaphorically...enjoy his sailing story.

But...of deeper importance personally, was Pirsig's revelation of the two human approaches to motorcycle maintenance, the "Classical" versus the "Romantic". And once the reader discovers this, one will immediately see the two definite types of people on every dock in every marina in the world. Upon deeper inspection we see that the two seemingly different approaches are not what one would at first think. "Zen" is a true monstrosity of a classic, and should be devoured by anyone who seeks the different inner path...
It should be required that all wind-powered vessels have at least one copy on board ...and all power vessels...two copies

Yes you are very correct. I fetl the wind on my hair while reading the book second time. This time the wind and air was salty.

Even though the feel to the book can be on road as on ocean I would love to read on rigging and navigation as the father talks about engine an the meaning of weather.

Thanks for the hint about Prisings other book.

You know...thanks for bringing this book to my attention again. I loved it the first couple of times I read it as a young man. Now, at the age of 63, I this very minute am going to go get that copy off the shelf and see if by opening my old 'dog-eared' copy I will be motivated to have another go at it after 40 some years. I'll bet I get another beautiful take on it. THANK YOU! Timing is everything...isn't it?

Well, I did as I said I would, and what a wonderful surprise. On the shelf right next to my original pinkish magenta "Zen and the Art..." book was another book I had completely forgotten about that I tackled way back in the early 1990's entitled; Guidebook to Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance c1990 by Ronald DiSanto Ph.D and Thomas J. Steele, Ph.D. If you really want to go deep...this Guidebook will twist you inside out.

Looks like I'm going to be taking that journey again now...after forty some years!

Can't wait to hit the road! ...er, uh...hoist sail!

Not always So and Beginners Mind, both by S. Suzuki I find to be useful. Sailing to me is an extension of inner peace. Zen has made me turn away from my acquision philosophies. Why try to obtain something which I already have within.

Pirsig used some of the profits from 'Zen' to buy a Westsail 32. Never heard if did any extensive sailing or cruising with the boat.

Moitessier's "The Long Way" or "Tamata and the Alliance" are arguably in the same spirit and share a lot of the mindset of "Zen".

Re: Similar book as Zen and motorcyles maintanance about sailing?

"Tamata and the Alliance" was interesting for the glimpse of colonial IndoChina but a bit preachy. "The Long Way" was what got me into long distance cruising. He really caught the essence of man and boat as one. Spent many hours sitting on the bowsprit hearing Moitessier saying, "Give me wind and I'll give you miles." I also really liked Moitessiers "Sailing to the Reefs" for a glimpse of the self sufficient cruising life that long ago disappeared.

Met Moitessier when he was living on Ahe in the Tuamotu's. He wasn't the typical yacht club sailor.

Wow seems like sailors are deep minded soul searchers. Well I am not suppriced at all. Travel by the means which has been used ages and be one with nature must be the place to avoid other distractions and find the true inner self.

Thank you for few new hints. I think The long way sounds very interesting if it has driven a man to the sea

The Water In Between - Kevin Patterson

Not quite as deep as Pirsig, but he basically translates a lot of other philosophers into sailing throughout the book. Really good read.

Thanks for the inspiration, I haven't read "Zen" in a long time, definitely time to reread, preparing to set out on a long journey myself.
