I had dive back in with a winch handle and an icepick sliding in pools of blood. When it was all done it looked like murder scene. I drank the tequilla and vowed never again to waste it on a fish. Days later I was still finding blood droplets undr the dodger and bimini.

That is the best fishing book for cruisers ever written. Lots of great info on hooks, type of gear to buy and even some recipes. Even for the complete novice it will not lead you astray. If you want to catch fish and only want to buy one book this is it. To identify the fish we caught we used the Pacific handbook of Fish and small paperback that would fit in my fishing bag. In addition if you are new to fishing and want a place to start this book will do it especially helpful is Scott's advice on the Penn reels and what you need to do when first purchased to insure longevity.

After spending a number of summers fishing in the SOC I put together a "Fishing tips for Sea Of Cortez" with Dave from Juanita my old fishing buddy. These are just random notes we would read to the fleet once a week when It was our turn to be net control on the Sonrisa net. People we met along the way asked me to put them together into a document which we did in 2011.

Dorado are amazingly strong. I found kneeling on them with both knees they could still lift me off the deck!

Just wanted to add my vote for this book. Really the best salt water fishing book I have ever seen. Has been a big help in our fishing efforts. Well worth buying.

Dorado can swim like 50 miles an hour. You get a lot of meat from one as they are almost all muscle.

For those in other parts of world, Dorado is same fish as Mahi Mahi or Dolphin. I think this fish is found all over the world.

On a passage from Hawaii to San Francisco this past summer, I used 4" natural color cedar plugs on 200# test with a shock cord set-up off the stern rail. Caught as many Mahi as we could eat, in fact had to stop fishing on occasion because we couldn't eat them as fast as we could catch them. Fastest hook-up was less than 5 minutes. No rod or reel, used a cuban yo-yo and brought them in my hand, all were in the 36" plus range. The only problem was running out of cabbage for the tacos too soon.

Yep when the dorado are hungry they will hit just about anything. We have caught them using a short piece of a drinking straw slipped down the fishing line over the shank of the hook. Crazy I know! Have seen them swim right up to our teaser we drag behind and almost touch it with their head. Have been told Dorado are one of the fastest growing fish. But maybe just a fish story.

You may have offended the fish by using "blanco". We use a good "reposado" and pour it into the gills straight from the bottle. The mahi appreciate it and go peacefully.

Haha that's a great story Hmmmm lets see one shot for the fish one shot for me . We use to use that method but then I would forget whose turn it was to get the shot

We use a SS loop stringer that divers use to string fish on. Soon as we gaff them we drag them onboard, towel over the eyes, insert stringer, slit the gills and then toss them back in to bleed out. Oh very important tie the stringer to the boat. Very little blood mess. Takes about 30 seconds. We leave the hook in until fish is dead. Bleeding overboard lessens the amount of blood on board to hardly anything. Wish we had an open transom to make it easier.

We also belong to that school of having fish blood everywhere including on the mainsail!

Our method is to use a YoYo and a bungee / clothes pin from the boat. Way too much hassle for a boat rod.
