Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We pillage, we plunder, we rifle, and loot,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot,
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We extort, we pilfer, we filch, and sack,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
Maraud and embezzle, and even high-jack,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We kindle and char, inflame and ignite,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
We burn up the city, we're really a fright,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.

We're rascals, scoundrels, villans, and knaves,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
We're devils and black sheep, really bad eggs,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We're beggars and blighters, ne'er-do-well cads,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
Aye, but we're loved by our mommies and dads,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.

ROGUE'S GALLERY - Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys.

It's a two disc set, produced by Johnny Depp with 43 songs by Lou Reed, Sting, Bono, Brian Ferry among many others.

If you can find some CDs by a band called the Wickford Express. They were out ot the Rhode Island area. They no longer perform as a group, but I have fond memories of seeing them preform on the lawn outside of Trinity church in Newport. We tried to book them for our wedding, but they had a previous engagment, so we ended up with a steel drum band.

Also the Mystic Seaport musem has a collection of CDs from their resident Shanty band.

In regards to the Rouges Gallery cd, while interesting, I find that it does not reflect true shanties.

If you strike out, send me a PM, and I will help.

There is a group called the Jolly Rogers that I think are pretty good at performing sea shanties. Their "Pirate's Gold" album has quite a few traditional shanties. The CD is available from Jolly Rogers -- Pirate's Gold CD: Dead Men Tell No Tales.com and The Jolly Rogers:* Pirate music, sea shanties and comedy

I sailed across the Atlantic twice on this beautiful sail ship:

Whenever we did manual labor on board we would sing shanties. It kept your mind off the work and when entering the rig it helped you forget how high up you were.

Håkon Vatle of Storm Weather Shanty Choir worked on board. He taught us heaps of information about shanties. I'm sure if you contacted him he'd be happy to share information about shanties with you.

What ship was this...?

The "Christian Radic" ?

The "Sørlandet"?

Looks like a small square rigger.

Wish I was there, beatiful weather and all.
And 30 years younger....

It was on Statraad Lehmkuhl, a square rigged, 3-masted barque.

She is bigger than both Christian Radic and Sørlandet.

It was an amazing experience to travel across the oceans with her. Imagine yourself hanging unsecured at the top of the Jacob's ladder some 150 feet above the ocean staring at the stars. Words won't do justice to the experience.

Singing shanties was also a fun part of it, that both motivated us and drove us on.

Territories - RUSH

I see the Middle Kingdom, between Heaven and Earth
Like the Chinese call, the country of their birth
We all figure that our homes, are homes set above
Other people than the ones, we know and love
In every place with a name
They play the same territorial game
Hiding behind the lines
Sending up warning signs

The whole wide world
An endless universe
Yet we keep looking through
The eyeglass in reverse
Don't feed the people
But we feed the machines
Can't really feel
What international means
In different circles, we keep holding our ground
In different circles, we keep spinning round and round and round

We see so many tribes, overrun and undermined
While their invaders dream, of lands they've left behind
Better people...better food...and better beer...
Why move around the world, when Eden was so near?
The bosses get talking so tough
And if that wasn't evil enough
We get the drunken and passionate pride
Of the citizens along for the ride

The whole wide world
An endless universe
Yet we keep looking through
The eyeglass in reverse
Don't feed the people
But we feed the machines
Can't really feel
What international means
In different circles, we keep holding our ground
In different circles, we keep spinning round and round and...

They shoot without shame
In the name of a piece of dirt
For a change of accent
Or the color of your shirt
Better the pride that resides
In a citizen of the world
Than the pride that divides
When a colorful rag is unfurled

The whole wide world
An endless universe
Yet we keep looking through
The eyeglass in reverse
Don't feed the people
But we feed the machines
Can't really feel
What international means
In different circles, we keep holding our ground
In different circles, we keep spinning round and round and round

I LOVE Rogue's Gallery! Some of my favorite songs are: My Son John, Sally Brown, Rolling Sea, The Mermaid (love the Carthy family singers), Dying Sailor..., Hog Eye Man, etc. Might I also suggest Ancient Mariners Chanteymen (my boyfriend sings with them), Holdstock and MacLeod: Deepwater Songs, Deepwater Shanties, The Seadogs: The Seadogs Present the Paddy West School of Seamanship. I love it because as a bodhran player, there are some great driving drumming rhythms. I also love Great Big Sea from the tropical island of Newfoundland Lastly, anytime I sail, I play scottish pipes and drums, including the pipe band I play with

You've got to check out The Sea Dogs, we downloaded their album from iTunes and it's awesome! My son calls it "real pirate music".

in the 50's my parents had a vinyl album "Down to the Sea in Ships" by Burl Ives. It was a collection of nautical music including Shanties, I am usually not a big fan of his but this was very good!. I still have it but it is so scratched it is not worth playing. I've been trying to find it on CD but no luck so far.
If anyone knows where I can get my hands on one please let me know.
Steve
