SCUBA Diving the Caribbean

I've heard rumors all over that countries are starting to get strict about diving from your yacht or dingy. Some countries are charging crazy fees or require you to dive with a local dive master etc. Has anyone been running into problems diving off your boat with your own equipment? Are you needing permits, to go through dive shops, hiring locals, etc?

Nope. USVI, bvi, Turks and cacos, Bahamas... No concern beyond your padi cert to get your tanks filled.

Re: SCUBA Diving the Caribbean

There are places that control diving. In the BVI I believe that one needs to use the local divers for Anegada (although I don't know how they will check) but no other restrictions. St. Barths requires private divers to pay a nominal park fee per person per dive when diving. I'm about to check out Dominica, I've been told that diving unsupervised off the boat is not allowed there either.

You re not allowed to dive by yourself in dominica. Anyways, the divings spots are far from the anchorages.

You must also go with a local dive operation on the island of Saba.

In SVG you have to go with a local dive shop if you dive at the Tobago Cays... Check out Glenroy Adams, at Grenadines Dive on Union Island. I got certified with Glenroy. He was the first certified dive instructor in the Grenadines... He's a really really good guy!
