San Diego fireworks
Heading to San Diego tomorrow to celebrate the fourth of July. We are sailing out of Harbor Island and want to watch the fireworks from the water. Where is the best place to do this and not have to motor back for hours in the dark after the show is complete?
Thanks much!

Re: San Diego fireworks
The Log had an article in the June 22nd edition that has a map that shows where in San Diego to go for the fireworks from the water. Page 19 has a map of the bay. See the two links below, the second link is the Digital Edition of the Log for June 22nd.
Bottom line, looks like anchoring off Tom Hams Lighthouse will give you a good view of at least three displays, the one on Shelter Island, the one on Harbor island and the one from the Midway. That is where we will be, after spending the day sailing on the bay.
Hope to see you there!

Re: San Diego fireworks
Thank you for the great info. Perfect since we are sailing out of Harbor Sailboats. One more question--we are thinking about sailing over to Mission Bay on Thursday and anchoring at Bonita Cove for the night. Do we need a permit or need to get there really early? I know it's the weekend of the fourth and all bets are off, but what is the usual protocol?

Re: San Diego fireworks
We have done this on a couple of occasions, (not sure it is right, but what worked for us), no permits. Plan on an all day sail/motor to get there, if you get in early so much the better. Don't forget to go around the kelp fields on the way out.

Re: San Diego fireworks
Yep--navigated away from the kelp beds before. We always just head out to ocean for a great sail, but wanted to try something a little different this time and head for a destination. I figured it would be a day over and a day back--is that like an 8 hour sail?

Re: San Diego fireworks
Between 6 and 8 depending on wind and how fast your boat is. What boat do you have, or do you know yet?

Re: San Diego fireworks
We have Wild Rose III, a 323 Beneteau. We've sailed her sisters, but haven't sailed her before, but expect her to perform similarly.

Re: San Diego fireworks
Well, we ending up rafting up with some friends at the other end of Harbor Island. Saw a fantastic 9 second display, called it a night and went home. Sorry to have missed you.

Re: San Diego fireworks
San Diego can accurately claim its fireworks display as the most unique and impressive show in the nation.
