Re: Sailing books to help get through the winter

There is a good round-up of new books in the December issue of Practical Sailor. Practical Sailor - January 2015
The magazine is well worth the cost and can be downloaded to e-readers.
Personally I love the sea-related short stories by Joseph Conrad!

If you want a good laugh, "The Boat That Wouldn't Float" by Farley Mowat.

I second that. I found the book riveting and at times almost unbelievable. The crew were driven by a quest to find the Polar Sea - talk about bad charts! - and got locked in the ice, for something like two years.

Try Lin & Larry Pardey's new biography At Long as It's Fun. It reads more like a novel.

Novels by Jimmy Buffet are fun. Lots of new books being written for Kindle. Check the free Kindle book lists.

Here's a list of a few classic choices. Nautical Books

TYPEE, by Melville. A little known book about the Marquesas in the 1840s. I read it years ago when in the Marquesas, and am reading it again now. I think it is free on Kindle. Also, WE THE NAVIGATORS , by Dr David Lewis. A great winter read. ______Grant.

Three that might not be as well known:

- Rounding The Horn: Being The Story Of Williwaws And Windjammers, Drake, Darwin, Murdered Missionaries, And Naked Natives

- Over the Edge of the World: Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe

- The Billionaire and the Mechanic

And four that are canon:

- A Voyage for Madmen
- Fastnet, Force 10: The Deadliest Storm in the History of Modern Sailing
- The Proving Ground
- Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage

For fiction try anything by Sam Llewelyn; or Bernard Cornwell (author of the Sharpe novels) has written 5 thrillers with a sailing background Sea Lord, Storm Child, Wildtrack, Crackdown and Scoundrel.

Re: Sailing books to help get through the winter

I recently finished reading The Shipkiller, for the second time. Last time was about 35 years ago. It was as good as I remembered. This time, as I was reading it, I wondered if the non-sailor would understand all the author was talking about when referencing sailing and the related terminology. I thought the author must be an experienced sailor or found someone who was to help him with the book.

I'm just finishing Sailing A Serious Ocean. I thought it was going to be just stories about the author's experiences but there's lots more to it. When in rough weather, I've always relied on just a handful of ways to deal with it. Kretschmer provides even more as well as what works and what doesn't in various heavy weather conditions.
