Rotten Dacron

Greets all,
Recently had to throw all the dacron off my heavy rod as it was rotten.
50lb black dacron and i could break it with my hands. All 400 yards of it rotten.
Line has been on the reel for about 5 years and used in salt water three or four times. Rinsed in fresh and stored in a cupboard after each use. Has anyone else experienced this with dacron? Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Thanks.

Dave

Re: Rotten Dacron

5 years sounds about right...

I used to use Dacron line for a purpose where it didn't get wet and that was about it.

Re: Rotten Dacron

Seems odd to me... the Dacron in sailcloth, especially if kept out of UV exposure, lasts far longer than that. I've had sails that were over 20 years old that were still serviceable. They had spent most of that time in sailbags, but had been exposed to salt water and sunshine at times.

Perhaps the Dacron used in fishing lines is different, but that seems unlikely. I would expect t hat the basic fibres that both line and cloth yarns are spun from would be the same. Post spinning they might experience different treatment... I dunno.

I'd be pretty upset if a sail fell apart after five years!

Yeah, I hear you. I was pretty upset when that 40lb Tuna waved a cheeky fin at me and swam away. Think that's the last time I use dacron for fishing line.
I figured it was a good choice as I've always seen dacron as braids big brother.
And it's got minimum stretch as well. But I think I'll stick to monofilament in future.

:-)

Re: Rotten Dacron

fishing line seems to be workable for ayear. i have some lines that, when unspooled , break. this will not catch fishies.
fisherman told me i need to replace yearly my lines. ok.
i found i can use my braided line successfully, but the monofilament i have to replace at least every coupla years, whether i keep in darkness or anywhere. when it yellows it rots.

Re: Rotten Dacron

If you want braided, there is Spiderwire, (Specter I think?) but be careful with that stuff, it is so strong that it will cut through a finger or hand before breaking.
I just use monofiliment
