Rated-R Movies and the Law

If you want to go through the effort, you could always copy them to a hard drive and encrypt them. One or more one terrabyte drives is certainly smaller than a DVD library. There are a few websites outside the country that sells software that allows you to this. It's relatively easy to hide files on a hard drive. Many graphics cards now have HDMI outputs which makes it possible to watch HD movies. So long as you purchased the original media and are not selling or giving it away then you are not committing piracy. Personally, I don't think it is anyones business how we convert our digital entertainment as long as we are not stealing it or giving it away.

If you are super paranoid, you can always put a piece of scotch tape over the terminals or pull your SATA port partially out so your disk with your movies does not show up at all in your "My Computer" window. Do a multi-partition on one of the other hard drives so it looks like multiple drives and they will never be able to tell the drive with your movies is not even connected to the motherboard. Simply plug the SATA port all the way back in when you want to watch movies. Encrypt those drives if you think they may want to take the whole computer.

Is it just me or are some crediting some Customs Officials with a lot more clues than I've seen? Sure some countries apparently look deep into computers but none I'd call 3rd world or even 2nd. The only time my computer was looked deeply into, for what they wouldn't say, was LA airport. What a bloody rigmarole that was, humourless bunch of sour faced ..........

Most places I've been which maybe regarded as not 1st world all the Customs guys seem to be happy with a brief glance for the obvious stuff and food stuffs. An open Playboy on the saloon table wouldn't be the smartest move, I'd suggest. Not to sure about the Disney covers either, some may ask to borrow the movie for a village movie night. I've had it happen twice and been happy to oblige. Movie back the next day without a drama.

But what if you forget which is which? I can just see it now - "Oh look Mummy a farm video but why has Goofy got 5 legs and Dasiy the cow got 2 udders?"

ROFL GMac...excellent point. If you see the locals getting in their outriggers with machetes and pitchforks...its probably time to cut the anchor rode and not ask for your movie back.

I think if ya need ya porn THAT MUCH.It might be a wiser move to supersize ya first aid kit,get a mitten(That will slow down early signs/damage),or,tell the missus "We are going sailing for a 1000 days,trust me on this one babe,we can do it!!"Bottom line is "Leave ya fantasies at home where it belongs"Surely you will bring home a few new ones from ya trip.Mudnut.

We found them quite the contrary at LA when we went through a few weeks ago. Highly intelligent, good humoured people doing a very interesting and extremely difficult job.

In this time that one country is being picked upon by every terrorist and every dangerous Looney and every 'funny' Looney there are these people who have just a few seconds to do a character assessment of who to let in and who to stop; who to search and who to not.

We went through LA in the middle of the night after a 20 hour flight, when the hall was full and everyone was tired, but instead of tiredly shuffling our feet, and boredly slapping our passports down, we looked alive; looked like we had a reason to be there; wanted to be there; respectful of them and their country. Ahead of us was a young person who was not. and he was graced with an extra interview - wether he got in or not I don't know.

If you want to understand what these guys put up with see the article below of some jerk, and what he was wearing at the time.

At midnight, after an hours wait in a line, when you smell from not having a shower, nor cleaned your teeth, you can't expect the officer protecting his country from murderers to be a bag of fun when you breath over him.

It's all about plausible deniability... With something like TrueCrypt - Free Open-Source On-The-Fly Disk Encryption Software for Windows Vista/XP, Mac OS X and Linux you can create hidden encrypted volumes inside other encrypted volumes. You can surrender the keys to the top level volume, where some things will be found, but all the interesting stuff is in the hidden volume, which can not only not be detected, nobody can prove it's a hidden volume...

MarkJ - Yes they do have a PITA job at times but that's no reason to 'assume' I'm one of the many people they have pissed off. I do travel on a passport from one of the US's supposed friends and have zero record of any dodgy. Assumptions are what got them where they are today, it had nothing what so ever to do with me or mine. Maybe if there was more 'treat others as you would expect yourself to be treated', I wouldn't be bitching.

The best or funniest Customs trip I had in Tonga. Arrived by boat and 6 large gents hopped aboard all wearing thick wool lined jackets in, to us, sweltering heat and one young lady in School uniform (a NZ girls only flash school). We were thinking 'Oh oh, what now?'. The boys sat in the cockpit and just chatted while the lady had a 2 minute look around then took a tomato. She did give us an official receipt, with the full embossed Kings arms thingy on it, for 'One tomato with spot'. I've framed it. Apparently she was the only one around who could write in english at the time so got roped in.

Ya just gotta love 'island style'.

Hey,I agree with ya totally.Fact is,that "Soft stuff"ya have could get ya in a hassle in other countries.If it's so R and not XXX rated,why take it cruiseing with you.Nothing substitutes for the real thing,regardless of how soft it is.Mudnut.

Cuz R movies have STORIES where the XXX stuff is kinda lacking in the plot department... I guess the R movie is a lot less of a thing to worry about when it comes to neighbors in a marina hearing what you're watching...

Years ago when movies came on REELS and you didn't travel with them, you could still spend years in a Turkish prison for entering Turkey with pornography (Playboy) or condoms. Both were contraband and while most customs inspectors really just wanted to seize them for personal use, mordida and corrupt inspectors happen all over the world. Once might say they are more the standard than the exception to the rule.

DVDs? Oh yeah, hot button. Counterfeit, or just locally unavailable, if the man wants them he's going to take them and he can readily resell them. If that gives him leerage to jail you and take the boat...you never know what you are stepping into. Why chance it? Check out noonsite or other places to see what is defined as contraband where you plan to go, and just don't carry it. IIRC it is Barbados(?) that totally bans wearing camoflauge clothing--even for kids. But in the States, kids wear it all the time. What's it worth to be caught wearing the wrong t-shirt? [g]

Wow...many of the sport fishermen wear camo around here. Do you suppose the fish can't see you if you are wearing camo?
