Ahh, I'm on board with that, too.

My current favorite "boat drink" - an Arnold Palmer (iced tea and lemonade) and Mt. Gay rum. Not gonna name it 'cause it (may be) kinda offensive - but it was named for Buddy Melgas.

Re: On board entertainment for a couple

Make a surprise to your soulmate

Drawing , Painting , playing music, reading, writing,

knitting, splicing, carving Wood, etching soft metals (all for boat decoration)

conversation , with her / others

Feel that being together, and discovering her, is a daily pleasure/surprise. (And let her know it!)

Maybe, change saloon accomodations, in order to make the boat more social! And invite people, organize aperitif for the community, or rhum tasting evenings (4-5 non banal bottles, and you are the hero of the bay...)

Study astronomy, and practice it. Or fishing, kayaking, chess....

Consider both things to be done together, and eventually alone.

Avoid anyting competitive or confrontational (like bridge..)

raise a pet, or care for some green, or flowers....

Organize a one night stand ashore.....

Being a caregiver is the key

Re: On board entertainment for a couple

Perhaps I missed the joke, but Buddy's last name is spelled Melges. No 'a'.

Once they leave not only will you appreciate your own space but you will have weeks of conversation about them.

Or, you never know, it could turn the other way. We had previously traveled with my brother-in-law and his spouse and, while they weren't "the most annoying couple we know", we didn't travel well together.

After a week with them on a canal boat in France last year and another week on our sailboat this year, we're all best of friends. It gave us the occasion to slow down and get to know each other in a context where there wasn't much else to do.

So YMMV but use it as a chance to get to know people in a different setting.

When it's just as a couple we're boring as hell from anyone else's point of view. Sit, think, cook, eat, relax, sleep, repeat. Half the time we can't even be bothered to go ashore when at anchor.

We play cards/games and read, catch a wifi and watch Netflix etc. When I get too bored I make plans to leave and move on!

I keep an acoustic guitar on the boat. Every now and then I play it. I'm not very good, but my wife likes being serenaded anyway.

Re: On board entertainment for a couple

I sing and play the guitar so can relate. But be considerate of others.

We were at anchor recently next to an island where we were concerned about some power boaters and their sound systems. In the end the only problem was canoe-campers who had a guitar and sang. Badly.

Re: On board entertainment for a couple

Usually up at dawn, active all day, and struggle to stay up past 8PM. Dont spend much time just hanging out...so much to do...work on boat, fish, snorkel, explore, sail to the next destination...

The Admiral does like to fall asleep while watching a movie though, so she starts watching it and I get roped into finishing it! Have a 1TB drive we usually load up before cruising season (Cellular Internet service is not really practical for watching on line).

Looking for suggestions for what people do when just hanging out on board. The admiral and I spend most of our days out anchored or on state park docks, we're not in the marina partying in town types, so we spend most evenings on the boat. We read A LOT but we'd also like to pull our heads out of our books every once in a while. We have a deck of cards, backgammon and Scrabble on board but the admiral gets a little competitive sometimes so that's not always relaxing.

What's your favorite way to pass the time with your significant other when just hanging on the hook (PG-13 only, please!)?

If there is just the two of you then you are in an intense one one thing 247
Find something you each like doing separately. Books, ear phone music, hobbies fancy knot work, knitting the list goes on. Together there is plenty to do from cooking to loving. Sleeping is great too.
But find some self time. This will keep you together for much longer.

Re: On board entertainment for a couple

Audiobooks! Podcasts! Some books you can listen to while you work on keeping your boat afloat. Others take more concentration.
I've got an audiobook that just came out on Audible if you're interested. I've got a few Audible coupon codes for a free download if you're interested.
All the best to you!

Re: On board entertainment for a couple

Listen to your wife talk to her mother on the phone while she is wearing earphones so you only hear 1/2 the crazy conversation, then invert stuff to go with it
