New Year: Who got out today?

Lots of folks (here on CF and at the local Marina) have said they want to go out more often. It's a Sunday, and while a little blustery and cold (20 knts; @ 35 degrees[F for the Canadian crowd ]) here in the PNW, three of us managed to get out for @ 3 hours in the Puget Sound.

So - quick poll; how many others managed to start the new year off with a sailing day?

Mrs. Flare and I did a little jump from Atlantic City to Cape May. Beautiful day. About seven hours.

Re: New Year: Who got out today?

Insatiable II finished her migratory passage from Manly Qld to Hobart, TAsmania on the first with a nice daysail from Chinaman's Bay on Mariah Island through the Dennison canal, up the Derwent river and to our usual anchorage in Sandy Bay. Foggy and damp in the early morning, overcast and limited viz all day, but a nice sailing breeze from the Canal to Hobart. Passed a lot of Sydney to Hobart race boats on their delivery t rips back north. Bunch of crew in foulies, no dodgers or other protection, rain f/c for thenext few days, and NONE of them sailing... ponca, ponca, ponca. Dunno if they will motor all the way to Sydney or wherever they hail from, but it didn't look like fun to me!

With a 50 degree F day in what is usually the coldest period of the year on the Chesapeake, I very much regretted hauling out for the winter; if that counts

Re: New Year: Who got out today?

Here on San Francisco Bay, we can pretty much sail year round, so I feel a bit sheepish to report a sunny day with 15-20-knot winds and temps in the 50s (brrrr!). This was the first year I participated in the Round the Island sail where 5 yacht clubs on Alameda Island open their doors for food and drinks and the 4 bridges open up for a flotilla of sailboats. We had eggs Benedict at Island Yacht Club, chili and gin fizzes at Aeolian YC, hamburgers at Balena Bay YC, a beer at Oakland YC -- they had run out of clam chowder -- and it was too late to stop at Encinal YC. What a blast! Happy New Year, everyone

Re: New Year: Who got out today?

Celebrated New Year's day with some fellow sailors for a powerboat ride down the East River, around Manhattan and then back to Larchmont harbor. Perfectly sunny day with smooth water the whole way. At one point we stopped to visit a fellow crewman whose apartment is right at the World Financial Marina. Came home as the sun set over the Brooklyn Bridge and the stars were out as we pulled up to the dock that was well marked with a lit Christmas tree. It was a perfect way to usher in the new year.

I got out in Marina Del Rey. A little wind but I did have sunshine to warm things up a bit. It was a beautiful peaceful day. I always do a solo sail on New Years

Re: New Year: Who got out today?

Hi to all and happy new year.
Long time no post. Just thought I'd join in on this post. Skylark and I (Skylark is my new pre loved boat. Swanson 38) sailed from one year into the next on passage from Bundaberg Qld to home port of Mackay.
Have a safe and prosperous 2017.

Sailed from Keehi Lagoon to Diamond Head and back. It was a perfect sailing day here in Honolulu; trades blowing at a steady 15, sun out and temp around 80. Happy New Year to all.

Re: New Year: Who got out today?

We left Oriental, sailed through the I Hate Football Regatta, and motored on to Beaufort, NC. Continued motorsailing overnight offshore to Masonboro Inlet and in to Southport via the ICW. First trip offshore for Tanager and crew, so all in all pretty exciting way to kick off the year. We had company from dolphins on and off through the night. Hoping to continue on down to Charleston on Wednesday, weather permitting!

Re: New Year: Who got out today?

Nine of us went kayaking in a partially protected area called Bird's Eye Cove, near Maple Bay, on Vancouver Island, BC Canada.
Quite cold, and heavy paddling against the wind coming back, but we all loved it, including the novices. Several of us were experienced kayakers and sailors so all were safe! There were a few comments that we should have gone sailing in my Bayfield 29 instead of kayaking, but 9 people on that boat just isn't going to happen! Great way to start the new year no matter what the craft!
Happy New Year to you all on both sides of the border!
Thank you for all of the interesting and helpful input on this forum!

Re: New Year: Who got out today?

Does taking the Hobie out in Tampa bay count?
Temps were in the upper 70s, wind around 10 knots. Maybe 4 hours of playing around out there.

PMagistro, I think I see you from the Surfchex webcam. Are you anchored out from the Fishy Fishy cafe? Yummy bloody marys there.
