Neptune vs Poseidon?

An interesting conversation I got into the other day, was the differences between Neptune and Poseidon. Which one do you pay respects to? I got curious and because I have only heard of the odes to Neptune, so I went to the trusty google. From what I've read, Neptune is the Latin version of Poseidon who is the greek version. Neptune was the god of freshwater and eventually became overwatch of the oceans. While in greek mythology Poseidon was the overlord of the oceans. Some say they are the same entity with just different names. Very interesting conversation. Don't want to be paying the respects to the wrong one!

Curious on peoples thoughts!

Re: Neptune vs Poseidon?

I suppose it depends on whether you want to cover all your bases. Even if you want to go all Greek, there is Oceanus (father of the Oceanid Nymphs) and then his wife Metis (I think) who was responsible for safe arrivals and perhaps some form of Wisdom. Then there are Thetis and Tethys and Pleione and a host of other Nymphs who cover some parts of wellbeing at sea.

I think that choosing between Neptune and Poseidon is the least of your problems as some of these others may be really ticked off if you take them for granted.......

Re: Neptune vs Poseidon?

Neptune was the brother of the god Pluto, the king of the underworld, and of Jupiter, the king of the gods. He was the son of Saturn and Rhea. He was described as having dark hair and a sea-green robe. He sat in a large shell pulled by seahorses and carried a trident.

Poseidon was one of the 12 Olympian gods. His parents were Cronus and Rhea. His brothers were Hades and Zeus, and his sisters were Demeter, Hera and Hestia. His wife was the sea goddess Amphitrite, and their children were Rhode and Triton. Poseidon is often pictured traveling in the water on his chariot and is considered a savior of ships as they cross the oceans. The Greeks believed he had supernatural powers over the sea. He carried a trident that caused earthquakes and tempests when he chose to use it. He was said to have a bad temper and used floods to exact revenge on those who did not do as he asked.

Except that you will p*ss off that grumpy old bloke with a long white beard who admits to being a "jealous god" and says: "Thou shalt have no other gods before me"

Don't leave out Mazu:

"In Chinese cosmology, Mazu is the patron goddess of seafarers, protecting fishermen and sailors from the wrath of the sea. She was originally born a mortal woman, Lin Moniang, in the year 960, according to legend; she was born on an island, and wore a red dress as she guided fishing boats safely home, occasionally using supernatural powers. Hailed as a miracle worker during her life, she has been worshipped by Chinese and Taiwanese seafarers ever since as the goddess Mazu or Tin Hau. She has also been attributed the powers of granting fertility and protection against pirates, and is traditionally depicted wearing her signature red garments."
