Movies to be Superstitious About
Hey everyone -
I'm not a superstitious guy except for baseball. As I get rid of all my worldy belongings, I am keeping certain DVDs from my collection and getting rid of the rest. Are there any titles that might be considered bad luck to have aboard? Here are some that come to mind:

Are you really inventing a new superstition? I've never heard of movies being bad luck. Just stick with the tried and true things to be superstitious about. God knows there's already enough of them.

Jake,
If you have the room to store them, KEEP THE DVDs. They make great trading stuff! Both locals and other cruisers will trade you for "stuff" or other DVDs. As a matter of fact, this last year we saw a LOT of the book lending libraries are now had some DVDs also. Greg

My theory on superstition is that it is the realization of events based on actions created by subconscious actions based on personal beliefs.
If you believe something is bad luck, and expose yourself to it, you will create, in your own actions, that bad luck. Or, you will interpret things as being bad luck as a result of that state of mind. As a solo sailor who has recently watched Dead Calm, consider the thoughts that you might develop, and the actions that you might take when confronted with a nightmare while becalmed. If those actions lead to a bad outcome, it will be very easy to relate the two. So, in other words, if you believe that having those movies on board is bad luck, leave them home.

I was a submarine sailor and I won't buy "The Abyss" (or watch it). The part where they are in the sunken sub and the crabs are eating the crew makes me freaky.....not sure if it is bad mojo, but I stay away from it.

Hi Carib
Also a ex boater, but I like to watch all the sub ones. Normally they are so fare out I laugh. Red October was close. Now what I cant watch is open water again or No 2. Thats a bit to close to home. Steve

Steve,
for the best faux-sub movie chuckle, watch crimson tide, multi story missle compt, dog peeing on the deck, chief of the boat called "Mister Cobb" and wearing an officer cap. Nutty. Bill............apologize for the drift.... |

Don't know about superstition, but "Open Water" definitely has a creep-out factor. Guess I really would prefer to go quickly. . . .

Superstition is the device by which weak, naive minds explain events that are, to them, inexplicable. Every event has an explanation, but not every person is capable of comprehending that explanation.

Then again, maybe there are some of us even the triangle doesn't want
In general, I agree with you, but I also feel that self fulfilling prophesies exist, an that is far more of an issue. Again, if you believe it will bring you bad or good luck, it probably will. For that reason, if someone feels a movie is bad luck to have on board, it probably will be. Take for instance the movie Clueless. If you actually want people to hang out with you, that movie might bring bad luck![]()
