I'll start the list.
We've had such lists a number of times here:

From a technology perspective, the best setup for a cruiser is a portable hard drive that plugs directly into a smart TV. Simple, portable, allows for easy management of thousands of movies. You would often see younger cruisers copying hard drives (similar to how cassettes were used in the eighties). If you really want to watch a movie on a tablet then android and windows are much better. For iPads the easiest solution is with an external flash drive and the VLC player. Copying unprotected content to the iPad is PITA.

From a content perspective, there are many movie rating sites. May be we can focus on movies about sailing or something like this. Otherwise try imdb.com

Re: movie library for i pad

We use a wireless AP with a USB socket.
A 128 gig flashdrive and a 4 USB socket hub for memory extension when needed.
The ViewSmart Laser projector receives the movies via wifi from the AP.
The boat's radio receives the stereo audio from the Laser projector via Bluetooth.
A 60" screen rolls up on a PVC piece of pipe and is stored behind a settee.
The whole thing weighs a couple of pounds and draws a total of 3 amps which also is powering our Ubiquity Bullet M2.
I didn't bother with another breaker on the panel, as the draw is so insignificant.
The result is a 60" HD stereo movie experience in our saloon.

I was not impressed with the touch pad sensitivity on the ViewSmart, so I purchased a Bluetooth mouse and keypad.
Running Kore/Kodi on my phone and the projector also gives me a remote control.
The whole system only cost about $600 USD.

The pic is fantastic, although we need either evening light or dark to watch without putting up light blocking shades on hatches.
That's not really a problem for us as evening is when we like to fire off the entertainment anyway.

Depending on the drive size, you can put a couple hundred movies on a laptop. And wire it to pretty much anything in the usual ways. It ain't rocket science. And there's more movies & tv coming out every day than you could ever watch.

It is kinda' nice to download/view the entire run of a tv series that you like, from season 1 to season X. Or the full series of a particular movie run, such as most of the Star Wars series.

But as stated, it's easy enough to copy/share movies with other cruisers, simply by copying them off of each other's hard drives. Just like trading music & playlists.

Don't forget to check out your local library. Most have extensive CD, DVD and BlueRay collections these days. Check out, burn and return.

That's where we got most of ours.

Re: movie library for i pad

I can't say much about streaming sites like Netflix as I don't normally have access anyway. I started my movie collection from a fellow yachtie who let me copy his HDD. I added to this collection DVDs I ripped that I found in flea markets and video shops that were closing. Quite a few family and friends also had large DVD collections which they allowed me to rip and copy. Ýou tube has a growing list of short movies and docos, but you will need special downloading software. My main source has been torrents from pirate sites. This of course is illegal and has ethical issues as well. Many countries block pirate sites so you may need to set up a VPN.
I am a bit of a collector so I look for specific classics, with a certain theme or from a particular Director. These are rarely commercially available anyway. Torrents are really the only way to find and build a a complete collection of these rare movies. It is surprising the range of movies people collect. It is not only just recent releases.
But beware there is a problem of malware that can often comes with the download.
Finally you will need plenty of storage, I'm up to 4T and growing.
