Re: Moonshine at sea

I believe it is misinformation to say that distilling is illegal in the *united states*.

I am certain that hobby distillation is legal in Texas, and most states would have similar hobby-level limits on fermented and distilled products.

Distillation is actually much easier than it is made out to be, and with the same care that it takes to be a sailor you can distill safe, tasty product.

The thread inspired me to take it up again, just ordered some turbo yeast from amazon, as I have never tried it...

;-)

It is illegal to distill drinking spirits in the USA unless you have the permits and pay taxes.

Spirits
You may not produce spirits for beverage purposes without paying taxes and without prior approval of paperwork to operate a distilled spirits plant. [See 26 U.S.C. 5601 & 5602 for some of the criminal penalties. You should also review our Home Distilling page.] There are numerous requirements that must be met that also make it impractical to produce spirits for personal or beverage use. Some of these requirements are filing an extensive application, filing a bond, providing adequate equipment to measure spirits, providing suitable tanks and pipelines, providing a separate building (other than a dwelling) and maintaining detailed records, and filing reports. All of these requirements are listed in 27 CFR Part 19.

Home Distilling

While individuals of legal drinking age may produce wine or beer at home for personal or family use, Federal law strictly prohibits individuals from producing distilled spirits at home (see 26 United States Code (U.S.C.) 5042(a)(2) and 5053(e)). Producing distilled spirits at any place other than a TTB-qualified distilled spirits plant can expose you to Federal charges for serious offenses and lead to consequences including, but not necessarily limited to, the following:
This is at the Federal level so it applies to all states.

Last time I checked, this also covered freeze distilling.

Re: Moonshine at sea

Whoops I am wrong and Dave is right.

Huh.

Weird, there are so many people that do it, and even retail shops that sell you the supplies - as well as Amazon.

I wonder what you have to do to get in trouble?

I can see selling it requiring taxes and a license.

Nevertheless, it wouldn't stop me from experimenting.

And an even better reason to do it on a boat - go offshore!

Sell it, trade it, or give it away to someone -- or just tell someone -- who doesn't realize they should keep their mouth shut about it. Then they tell someone else, who tells someone else... And pretty soon someone who cares about these laws hears about it, and suddenly you have the "revenoors" knocking on your door (or, more likely, knocking DOWN your door!).

Re: Moonshine at sea

I distilled alcohol in Military school, just regular sugar and warm water with baking yeast, fractional distillation, if I remember right alcohol boils off at 79 C so any above that and the alcohol is gone.
Do not use rubber anything, stoppers, hose, nothing , the taste is horrible.

Depending I guess on where you are and who catches you, but distilling alcohol is punishable likely more so than cooking meth
