Mattress

Where else but Entertainment and Fun can I post information about my new mattress? After finding nothing online to suit our needs I found The Foam Factory, Clinton Township, Michigan. Bare foam is amazingly cheap compared to finished mattresses and it's easily covered upholstery style or, if standard size, with fitted mattress pads. Best part is that the company can compress so tightly for shipping that a 6-inch thick standard size double came in a box the size of a bushel basket! Shipping is free in US. Company does a lot of work for boats, so they can custom cut or contour for any configuration. This is an unsolicited testimonial.

Re: Mattress

Janet, we just received new foam for all of our salon cushions from The Foam Factory and you are right on. The price is right and the quality is great. Chuck

Re: Mattress

Even Fearless Fosdick can't beat Miss Serendipity! Would you please tell me what kind of foam is best for a small sailboat's (CP-16) bunks? The Foam Company offers many different types of closed foam, but one must be better than another.

Thank you. Skip20

Re: Mattress

The guy I talked to when I ordered by phone was enormously helpful. Ask his advice. Just keep in mind that you can always use an egg crate or memory foam topper over foam that proves to be too thin. Camping supply stores also sell compression pads for backpacking. They swell up when released.

Do you have, or have you had, a latex mattress aboard? I'm very interested in this as we bought a latex mattress some time back. We absolutely love it, but I didn't know if it would translate into boat life so well, with the humidity, etc.

Re: Mattress

I bought a latex 4" hunk o foam. It is comfy enough. mainly we bought it cuz we did not like the idea of cheap foam off gassing. "natural ".
In the future I will do what I have done in the past and use many layers of cheap one inch foam, in a canvas duck cocoon. Cheap one inch foam can get be washed , and air dried easily in a day. If it does not dry in one day, one risks a bad odor from mold/mildew. The latex cannot be washed, and when we rarely take it out of its' cover, lots of little pieces get all over. It has not become funky, and it has been 5 years aboard the tropics.
