Douglas Reeman AKA Alexander Kent...
He wrote the Captain Bolitho books but I like his other novels better.

I love the books (on The Commodore as we speak - I read about 2/year) and also liked the movie. Russell Crowe was, indeed, much too dashing (and slim) for Aubrey, but some of the others were fine, I thought. And I agree that the mashup of plotlines from two different books was a little disturbing. Would have been nice if they'd picked a good unknown for the lead - someone who had the potential to stick with a franchise - and started with book #1.
