Re: Kitecam video of own boat

I agree, that is priceless. Is the camera something like the GoPro? Care to share some links for the kite and frame?

Re: Kitecam video of own boat

Nice! I've been thinking that would be a fun project. Here's a link, with some of their camera info, to some more kite-cam footage I came across:

I wonder how difficult it is to keep the camera so stable during a tack.

Thanks, now all you need is footage of your boat over taking another. Was it a GoPro camera?

Re: Kitecam video of own boat

Your too honest. You have a good looking boat, and with your LOA I'm sure you overtake your share. Thanks again for the prompt responses concerning the type of videos we all want of our boats but aren't fond of the helicopter price tag.

Here's a great kitecam video by San Francisco-area singlehander Chris Humann.

WOW!!!

I didnt even know I wanted one of theses...till now. The footage is fantastic and much more stable than I would have imagined it to be. Will be looking itnot this myself.

How much in cost would it be for a camera? If you didnt use the gopro - what do you recommend?

Chris Humann took this footage, not me (I've never done this, I'm just an admirer). Chris has provided some links to KiteCam gear and techniques:

Kite Aerial Photography Equipment

Chris' videos were taken before the GoPro was even invented, although it seems that it would be a good camera for the job. I don't know if the wide-angle lens would be an issue or an advantage.

Re: Kitecam video of own boat

I checked his sites, a lot more involved than I thought to get those kind of videos. This one works with the ipad (which I have) and from reports is VERY easy to fly and rack up some primo videos.
AR.Drone Parrot - First quadricopter that can be controlled by an iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad and Android

I just ordered one, let you know how it works out.

Re: Kitecam video of own boat

Chris uses what is a pretty simple setup. I just remembered that one of my crew had borrowed Chris' kitecam gear and took it along during our 2010 Pacific Cup race. He never actually tried it (he was seasick, the weather was lousy, etc). As I recall, the rig was just the cross / pully arrangement, with a fixed-mount for the camera. Chris would just turn the camera on, then launch the kite. It was something like this:
