Re: I Broke the Law Today!

Ahh Yes, crime on the high seas...

A few years ago there was born a white humpback whale calf, and he and his mom were northbound on the east coast of Oz. Migalu (it's name, garnered from who knows where) drew much attention from the media and thence the boating folks. Soon there were crowds following the poor couple about watching him do baby whale things.

Sooo, the wise men in Canberra passed a special law saying that if one came within a kilometer of the beast, one was subject to a fine of something like 60 kilobucks.

Well, we were also northbound on that coast, and one day as we passed through the narrow gap between Cook island and the mainland, the bloody little whale broached about 50 metres from us. This instantly criminalized us to our everlasting shame. We were constrained by our draft to continue onward, and so continued our life of crime until the passage widened out and we could escape.

Being the honest citizen that I am, I immediately sent the gov a check for the amount of the fine... so, Capt F, should you. Shoulder your duty to mankind and the preservation of manatees and pay up... just like I did (not).

Cheers,

Jim

Re: I Broke the Law Today!

Jim,

You realize you have just exposed yourself as a GBR whale terrorist.

Guess since you made a donation to our feds they will allow you to stay in our waters.

Keep away from the whales on your way north this year. Don't know how you do it.

Crazy law.

You were right of course, the off topic discussion( only by a long way) encompassed two songs. Where's the aging hippies thread gone?

The tiny potatos like to suck on your toes - if toes were available dangling in the water from a swim platform.

Re: I Broke the Law Today!

I like to sing,
"I Wish I Had a Pencil Thin Mustache" to the tune "Alice's Restaurant".

It fits perfectly.
--------
Now they make new movies in old black and white
With happy endings, where nobody fights
So if you find yourself in that nostalgic rage
Honey, jump right up and show your age

I wish I had a pencil thin mustache
The "Boston Blackie" kind
A two toned Ricky Ricardo jacket
And an autographed picture of Andy Devine

I remember bein' buck-toothed and skinny
Writin' fan letters to Sky's niece Penny
Oh I wish I had a pencil thin mustache
Then I could solve some mysteries too

Then it's Bandstand, Disneyland, growin' up fast
Drinkin' on a fake I.D.
Yeah, and Rama of the jungle was everyone's Bawana
But only jazz musicians were smokin' marijuana
Yeah, I wish I had a pencil thin mustache
Then I could solve some mysteries too

Then it's flat top, dirty bob, coppin' a feel
Grubbin' on the livin' room floor (so sore)
Yeah, they send you off to college, try to gain a little knowledge,
But all you want to do is learn how to score

Yeah, but now I'm gettin' old, don't wear underwear
I don't go to church and I don't cut my hair
But I can go to movies and see it all there
Just the way that it used to be

That's why I wish I had a pencil thin mustache
The "Boston Blackie" kind
A two-toned Ricky Ricardo jacket
And an autographed picture of Andy Devine

Oh, I could be anyone I wanted to be
Maybe suave Errol Flynn or the Sheik of Araby
If I only had a pencil thin mustache
Then I could do some cruisin' too

Yeah, Bryl-cream, a little dab'll do yah
Oh, I could do some cruisin' too

Try these...

Alice's Restaurant. 23 minute version. From an album, apparently.

The Motorcycle / Pickle song. Recorded live. Somewhere.

Now I gotta go clean the bilge. Or something.

I saw a family of potatoes once in the club marina. There was a mother potato -- you know those things can weigh 1200 lb? And an adolescent about half her size, and a newborn potato, very, very young. So you knew the mama potato was nursing (mostly only botanists know this, but potatoes are mammals).

Well, you're not supposed to water the potatoes, but we turned on a hose, and that mama potato drank and drank and drank. The poor thing was very thirsty! Then she'd just play in it. We put our thumbs over the hose edge to make a spray, and she'd swim by and roll in the spray (amazing how well potatoes can swim, they look so ungainly in the water).

As she paddled around, we saw the sweetest thing -- the adolescent potato had one flipper on his mama's back as they paddled around. Potatoes are really calm around people. We didn't try to touch the baby, and the mama seemed to know that we weren't the Irish stew-type humans, and clearly completely trusted us.

I adore potatoes.

You can swim with them in the Crystal River. They have two roped off areas where they mustn't be bothered, and if they're asleep on the bottom in the open area you have to leave them alone, but sometimes they approach you, and if *they* approach you, then you can interact with them. They told us that they particularly like to be scratched on their backs, but not their stomachs.

I was having trouble with my swim flipper and returned to the tour boat a little early, and gave my disposable underwater camera to a friend. RIGHT after I left, a manatee swam right up to her and stared her in the face -- and she had the presence of mind to take the picture. So cool. But don't break the rules. They have trained spotters who have radios to F & W officers. One guy got a $500 fine for going into the roped-off area. He swore he hadn't, but of course dozens of people saw him.

If you notice Arlo's voice is about 30 years more mature (along with his mug recreating the original album cover) than the original album (which I bought back then), plus he picked up the tempo to shorten it from 27 minutes and add additional dialog.

Fellow boaters, let me be perfectly clear, "I did not have relations with that potato!"
