Re: How many people fish on passage?
This is my theory. Smaller lures catch smaller fish that are easier to bring aboard. Seems to work for me. I don't want the big fish to fight all the way to the stern. Mahi mahi, ahi and aku in their smaller version are great eating.
I dragged two lures from Hawaii to Washington State years ago and we were always in fish breakfast lunch and dinner. We finally decided we'd had enough fish and didn't put them out the last few days. Red lure on one side and blue lure on the other.
kind regards,

Red and black, Wahoo attack. Yellow and green, Mahi machine.

Re: How many people fish on passage?
After we lost a $4 lure in the first hour of trolling under sail, we decided "no more Nice Guy." Used 80-pound test line, reel clamped to a stanchion, shiny hook and a yellow rag (favored by mahi-mahi) or a clear plastic shampoo cut in strips to resemble squid. Never spent anything more on lures.

Re: How many people fish on passage?
A cedar plug ($10) does the trick. I used to make my own lures out of the shiny mylar bags in box wine but they're all clear plastic now and not much good. A cedar plug usually lasts two season before it's all chewed up.

Re: How many people fish on passage?
We used a rubber squid lure last time from HI to BC. It worked.
Line and bungy cord with gloves to retrieve.

Re: How many people fish on passage?
We troll a line, if we catch a fish, we pack away the line.
Its not a sport, its a gift from nature.
We do not freeze, or hoard.
If we go about grabbing all we can today, there will be none tomorrow.
We use alcohol to stun before killing.
In the San Blas, we were asked why we were not fishing when they saw our gear. We replied "Because they are your fish not ours"
We never take what is not ours.
As a young punk I used to catch too many fish.
I feel guilty for that.
Now that I'm an old fart, I like to go gently about this beautiful, fragile, blue planet, after all, I would like to share it with you......

@ Vasco.
I see you're a "filet and release" advocate!

I didn't realize the size until I had filleted it. Then we got the camera out. Anyway it was too heavy to lift without filleting. We usually keep the carcass for a fish stew but had no room to store it so the sharks got a treat.

Re: How many people fish on passage?
filet and release, yes. feed more sea life. i do no tuse any alcohol to allegeedly stun the fish--i just clean it and eat it.
i used to use a pole and all the expensive rig to catch fish--but they answer to mexican hand over hand just as nicely as when they break my pole. i have caught bigger and yummier fish sans fancy stuff than with it,,,,i just dont let the fish fight--i make it plane so it breathes air then i fillet it and release to the sea for food for other fishies, and i eat the fish i caught before i catch another.

Re: How many people fish on passage?
I like to hang a light over the water when at the dock and attract fish . If I see birds working down wind i use a kite rig and get right over the fish and yank it hard and it drops right in the school, real handy when you dont want to play around and want to eat...DVC

Re: How many people fish on passage?
Great stuff everyone. SO it looks like my lazy approach is not really that far off from what meny others are doing.
I think I may just add a rail mounted reel and call it a day then.
Appreciate the info on bait size and color.
In all of your experince what would be the best baits for different speices and locations?
