How Many Have a Boat Blog or Website ?

Thought it would be fun to see the blogs and websites of our owners here, and give examples to folks that would like to start one. I know there has been much discussion on this. It would be great to have them found in one spot, I love to read them!

I have just started my blog, shown on my profile.

I'd also like to know if there is still a banner to refer to this site.

Aloha Janny,
You didn't have a block for "Don't have the time to do one." That would be my response.
I do sometimes enjoy seeing other folks blogs and websites but usually can't take the time. I already post on this forum way too much.
Kind Regards,
JohnL

Thanks guys, reading the blogs also helps finding more photos, ideas and answers to problems.

John, are sure you aren't just lazy? If I could change it, I would-- can I?

Well we have a website that is intermittently updated. Susan has been so busy helping folks out w/boat insurance that updating the web page would keep us from having any time, meeting others, exploring, etc.

We have been in St Augustine for nearly two months and hope to get moving towards the Bahamas on Tuesday, 15 Jan.

Keep up your blog Janny!

Nomadness

I have a sprawling website that's filled with everything from ancient static content (a cobwebsite, really) to "live" updates every few days that are not archived (unlike a blog, which I have as well).

What I found is that when I'm blogging, I'm conscious of making it good enduring stuff (the curse of being a writer)... but nobody 3 years from now is going to care that I'm spending this week ordering boat goodies online and clearing out my lab so it can be properly insulated. So I post to the live page with fleeting ephemeral details about what's happening now, and use the Nomadness blog for commentary that is worth saving

In addition to those, I archive more substantial articles in their own collection, and one can wander off into all sorts of arcane directions, some less relevant than others, from the front door that is still named after my previous boat project.

(There is also a category of real-time stuff, which will go live when the on-board linux server flickers to life sometime in the next few weeks. This will include a mirror of the webcams, a few dozen data-collection points, twitter-like annotations about what's up, the GPS tracker, and so on.)

Annoyingly, some of this is feeling like a bit of a liability... it all has to be maintained, even when voyaging. Unless I can find a base office manager who can pretty much do everything, I'll probably still be hand-coding HTML and fiddling with FTP and SSH sessions via insanely expensive satellite links or tenuous connections to shore over an arcane lash-up of beams and WiFi widgetry. Sometimes I just want to shut it all off, go dark, and slip away with a minimum of blinkies!

But the Inner Geek wouldn't be satisfied.

Cheers from the nomadhouse,
Steve

I was wondering if it was possible to have a website that only those you want to have access to, so that you can post for friends and relatives, but not have the whole world watching . . .

Sure you can. It might entail a professional setting it up initially.

Waterwordly, a blog is much simpler and yes you can make it private and send out invitations to it, at least with blog.com, and it's free--I belive freewebs does it too.

Pivacy on the web??

My thought is that nothing on the web is truly private. Even security provisions can not guarantee privacy.

Many of the students who attend the school where I teach learned this the hard way. It seems that their photos of a party with underage kids drinking alcohol resulted in rash of disciplinary cases recently. Those photos had been posted on a site with restricted access.

On the other hand, our site is not private but hardly anyone visits it--so I guess that is the next best thing

We have one. It chronicles the building of our 50' steel boat. It took a lot of time to set up, but it's an interesting project to learn how to do a web site, and it's a good way to organize the history of the project. Bob S/V Restless
