Home sickness..
Don't know if this is the right forum for this but here goes..
There's folks here who are ex-pats.. long term cruisers that are scattered round the world on long circumnavigations.. or just working oversea's..
What I'm kinda curious about is, what triggers a sense of home sickness in you.. I'm not talking about crap beer, food or everyday gripes.. but something deeper in the soul.
This is for those who are generally happy where they are and with what they are doing.. but every so often something triggers a sense of nostalgia and longing for your homeland..
For me.. its the Antiques Roadshow when it pops up with old shows on BBC Entertainment now and then.. the rich variety of people, accents, places I have roamed like Warwick Castle, Stratford on Avon, the Cotswolds, St Ives.. it reminds me what a beautiful place the UK is..
it never fails to stir something in my soul..

Not being able to talk to somebody that speaks English as a first language.

That comes under everyday gripe.. I live with someone who does not even speak it as a 1000th language..

Re: Home sickness..
If you travel enough, no place is home. For me, anchored in a quiet cove and not seeing or hearing humans is what I yearn for.

This
No nationalistic feelings.
Come from a family that are off roaders/desert people so kinda miss that when I see photos on facebook. But not strong enough to pull me from the ocean

Re: Home sickness..
It’s an interesting discussion Boatie. I know people who get homesick. I don’t (so far) and don’t fully understand the longing. However, I do feel an affinity for certain types of space or geography.
I love the rugged shorelines where the rocky ancient Canadian Shield meets the waters. It’s why I appreciate places like Newfoundland. Perhaps this is my “home."

Re: Home sickness..
Hi, everybody,
My own yearning is for a fantasy of my homeland--it never existed, but in my heart, and much as I enjoy Australia, America is where i learned to love my country. It is wilderness America I crave. And I am unhappy about much in the US, as well.
I do not feel homesick for it, and mostly, I miss only my friends and relatives who are still living. In that, I am like lepke: my boat is my home, and I am happy in it, wherever we happen to be.
Mike, you have not left Canada for many-year stretches. As yet, you've had no reason to feel homesick, your pattern is to winter in the Okanagan, and summer on your boat. If you spend time somewhere foreign, where you barely speak their language, and there are no other Canadians around, your experience may be different.
One thing I miss when I am here, is the smell of pine forests. I came from California, and there are heaps of blue gums there, and so I experience Australia after a rain, like a smell of "home." But it is like a reminder, not a homesick feeling, more nostalgia.
Ann

Or is that Boatie’s head? Or Hat? Or Id???
I’m so confused

Re: Home sickness..
Sometimes I get homesick when I realize I don’t have a home.

Re: Home sickness..
When I was a full time liveaboard I don't recall ever getting homesick. I guess because I was "at home".
Now that I'm living in a house and travel to places "on vacation" I enjoy the trip but after a while feel like I've had enough and am very glad to get "home".
