Hawiian slings

Hi all. I tried browsing for any info or talk on Hawiian slings, but came up with nothing. Very little knowledge on them and wondering about preferences and how many spare spears are necessary.

Re: Hawiian slings

Spare spears depend on how good you are at spearing fish and what depth you can go down to.

For snorkeling a pole spear is much better as the rubber is always at hand . In years past when shooting lobsters was permitted we would shoot with a pole spear , remove and place the lobster on a Hawaiian sling spear and lay it on the bottom till it had ten or twelve stuck on it , those days have been gone for 40 or fifty years now .

Re: Hawiian slings

I find the Hawaiian sling is better for going after fish in an open environment as you can shoot from further. However it takes both hands to operate so when going after fish under a coral head I switch to a pole spear which is a one handed affair allowing my other gloved hand to steady myself when reaching under the head.
As for how many spares you need, like previously said it depends. I have never purchased a spare but my stash of spares continues to grow as I find other people's lost spears all the time.
