pirate Happiness...

Sky News has just done a 'Happiness Analysis' and one person was saying that Social Media should be on the 'Causes Unhappiness List'..
Seems they think this is a Voyeuristic Compulsion that leads to depression as they view the lives of others in comparison to their own..
WTF..!!
It relieves me from boredom, keeps me in touch with friends, the world, my interests and my work..
It does Not depress me that Kennomac has an Oyster or that Jedi owns a gorgeous Sundeer... in fact it makes me happy for them..
Same with Sailorboy and his Hunter.. and his cruising budget..
My honest opinion is that some folks are only really happy being miserable.. and if they are not they are unhappy because the sky must be about to fall in..

Re: Happiness...

Great post Boatie, and I agree with you 100%.

A couple of months ago I had a little meltdown and decided to take a social media vacation. Within days I was getting phone calls, emails, and text messages from friends asking where I'd gone, and asking was I okay. How could knowing that people care about you and actually miss your presence when you're not around be depressing?? I felt great to know that so many people actually cared enough to notice I wasn't there. I also missed all the cruising boats I follow and seeing the updates from other informational sites I like. I must not be "aware" as some others because it never occurred to me that I should be comparing my life to anyone else's. Silly me.

Social media is what you make of it. I use it for information (both getting and sharing), entertainment, and keeping in touch with people I care about. And happiness is a choice. Unhappy people are likely going to be unhappy whether they are looking at social media or standing outside kicking rocks. That's just who they are.

Re: Happiness...

I like seeing you guyz being happy.
Watching happy makes me happy.

zee zee joy and being happy makes me happy.
Boaty charm and humour make me happy.

Social media doesn't make me happy when I read my "friends" (a grossly misuesd word) posting pictures of their meals or their cats or wanting me to vote them as cutest couple in a contest.

Two in one but just for you.. No Pictures..

Roast Cat as You Wish to Eat It.
You will take a cat that is fat, and decapitate it. And after it is dead, cut off the head and throw it away because it is not for eating, for they say that eating the brains will cause him who eats them to lose his senses and judgment. Then flay it very cleanly, and open it and clean it well, and then wrap it in a cloth of clean linen. And bury it beneath the ground where it must be for a day and a night; and then take it out of there and set it to roast on a spit. And roast it over the fire. And when beginning to roast it, grease it with good garlic and oil. And when you finish greasing it, whip it well with a green twig , and this must be done before it is well-roasted, greasing it and whipping it. And when it is roasted, cut it as if it were a rabbit or a kid and put it on a big plate; and take garlic and oil blended with good broth in such a manner that it is well-thinned. And cast it over the cat. And you may eat of it because it is very good food.

Re: Happiness...

Aside from this forum I have no social media accounts what so ever and I Love it!! I got rid of my facebook 3 years ago and I haven't looked back since.

I got tired of all the cries for attention, shameless self promoting, and most of all the relentless status updates of what people ate, when they ate, how they slept, that their boss yelled at them, why their life is hard, and so on.

atleast on here its about a subject I love and the forum "tends" to stay on topic with boating.

Exactly!!! I strongly believe it leads to a level of Narcissism and over self importance that is destructive. Kind of along the lines of the every one gets a trophy generation.

Re: Happiness...

Phil, thanks for asking us to think about happiness. I don't think social media is a cause of unhappiness. Although it may be a resting place for some people who don't know how to be happy.

Happiness is a conscious choice. It is possible when having unhappy thoughts or when faced with a frustration to stop that line of thinking and direct your mind to think about things in a happy way.

As an example, if you lose a loved one you can dwell on how miserable you are without them or you can direct your mind to think about the happiness they brought you and how beautiful life is everyday.

Studies have been done on people who meditate about happiness and they have been found to have measurable chemical changes in their brains. Happiness is a choice but, like meditation, also a skill that can be improved with practice.

Choose happiness. Go sailing. Life is beautiful.

The same here.

CF is the only social media for me, we don't participate on Facebook... I really don't get the whole Facebook thing. My wife has a fictitious Facebook page where she has over 100 friends.... Over 100 people are friends with someone who doesn't really exist and who never responds to them.

Re: Happiness...

What about all those people (like I know) who have 2000 friends in their profile?

Whomever has the most friends when they die wins?
