Georgia and South Carolina coastline.

How would you rate this coast compared to that from San Fran to Florida, via the canal?
There really has not been that much friendly coastline so far. Either bad guy's or rocks, coral or a barren shore. Panama and Belize, the Rio in Guatemala are good in places but otherwise you had to be on your toes. We are looking to cruise relaxed and anchor a lot.

Let's see...

Vicious Sand Flies - check!
Hot and humid - check!
Curvy backwater marshes - check!
Six to eight foot tidal ranges - check!
Poop brown water - check!
Very light summer winds - check!
Close-minded racist homophobic bigoted rednecks - check!
Great BBQ - check!

....what's not to love?

Speaking of closed minded....

Nice part of GA is that they had enough fore thought to protect the Outer Barrier Islands from over development .

Like anywhere some like it, some not so much.

Re: Georgia and South Carolina coastline.

I don't know a whole lot about GA, but from Savannah to Charleston, there are quite a few rivers and bays that make nice anchorages, including Hilton Head, Port Royal, St Helena Sound, South Edisto River, North Edisto River, Bohicket and of course, Charleston. North east of Charleston, there's only Winyah Bay (Georgetown) until you get to the North Carolina line, so not much for a quite a ways.

The waters here are shallow, so when coasting, you need to stay a good bit offshore, a couple of miles, usually. In any case, mind your charts.

It is, however, summer. If you have AC and a generator, you'll be fine. Otherwise, you'll sweat like never before. It can be especially bad if you have to close up the boat because of a thunderstorm, and they're pretty common in the afternoon here.

Let me know if I can answer any specific questions.

Best of luck.

What an offensive hate-filled reply. I thought this type of hate-speech was forbidden on this forum.

I see hate-writer Delancey has 3223 posts. Maybe it's time for him to retire his hate and go somewhere else.

Cool! New to this forum, I just realized that you can block messages from certain members. I vote everyone from the South and those with respect for others to block Delancey. I will.

Georgia and South Carolina coastline.

It was put a little too strongly and I'd ask in the future to calm it down a little, however
While it may sound like hate speech, as a born and raised Ga boy myself, I can attest to some extent it's not too far from the truth, sometimes.
Of course most are not like that, however when you get into South Ga and little towns, you should be prepared to meet that.
It's not really that bad at all, but beware your not in Jersey anymore.
This was many years ago before some of us were even born in fact, but it's an educational article about a Coastal Ga small town.

I'm not condemning this place, I grew up here and call it home as much as anywhere, however just know it is different than up North Urban area

Re: Georgia and South Carolina coastline.

whether you like it or not, I don't think that post was wrong

but I would also like some good GA/SC coast cruising info (like a good guidebook recommendation) as I have time to kill before heading into a GA marina for 3 months for the summer hurricane season (and I hope the BBQ one is right but on my trip south last year I'm not convinced)

Welcome aboard WillyTheRat. Probably not a great introduction. You might want to take a deep breath and try starting over.

Tolerance and understanding go both ways. Not much hate speech in the original post, but a lot of hate and anger in the responses.

Feel free to block me while you're at it.

Georgia and South Carolina coastline.

Sailorboy,
we will have a car when we are there and will try to find you some good Bar b que.
My wife is not a big fan, only time we have gotten honest to God real food poisoning was from some way back when off of I-16 west of Savannah, about 35 years ago.
That once was all it took for her though.

I have honestly never cruised the coast of Ga, but it's my impression that there is not much there, not many safe harbors, anchorages etc.
I don't know about South Carolina but think the Northern part and further up the cruising is not bad.
I think most coming down to Fl from the North have a tendency to avoid Ga.
Ga is not real boater friendly, until very recently it was illegal to live on a boat in Ga., and I think there were real severe anchoring restrictions too, but am not sure.
I have usually lived closer to Fl Gulf coast that the Ga coast even though I have lived in Ga most of my life.

Re: Georgia and South Carolina coastline.

Meh, anyone educated knows that there is absolutely nothing about my post that even remotely constitutes Hate Speech since racist, homophobic, and/or bigoted rednecks are not a protected group.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_speech

As far as putting it too strongly, how do you suggest I calm it down a bit?

I am just asking because I call them like I see them and don't know a "nicer" way to put it. I lived in Georgia for a year, I met a lot of these types of people. More in a year than I ever met in my entire life prior. I can only assume anyone who has lived there and doesn't think it is all that bad is probably a white male.
