For those of us that cruise in power boats, The 555 refers to the Cummins 555 diesel engine, that is one of the three major manufactures of diesel engines in older yachts.

I can only think of the Simpson-Lawrence two-speed windlass that was popular for decades (1970 to 1990 or so). Big brother to the little SL 510 windlass.

The dinghy referred to in a previous post is a 505, not a 555, and that refers to it's length in centimeters. Very fast, seaworthy boats, designed over 50 years ago. Still one of the most competitive classes on the planet.

With all the posts about electronic times, telephone numbers, Cummings engines ect. I have to stick with it predates all those things, in King James Bible the word Christ appears 555 times. I'm not an expert on this but a simple google search came back with mostly religious hits.
