Re: general query-meaning of 555?

One meaning is a reference to the Caterpillar 555 Model Diesel, no longer supported and no parts available so a NO buy kind of engine. Called also the Triple Nickle.

Re: general query-meaning of 555?

For those of us that cruise in power boats, The 555 refers to the Cummins 555 diesel engine, that is one of the three major manufactures of diesel engines in older yachts.

Re: general query-meaning of 555?

I can only think of the Simpson-Lawrence two-speed windlass that was popular for decades (1970 to 1990 or so). Big brother to the little SL 510 windlass.

The dinghy referred to in a previous post is a 505, not a 555, and that refers to it's length in centimeters. Very fast, seaworthy boats, designed over 50 years ago. Still one of the most competitive classes on the planet.

Re: general query-meaning of 555?

There are 4 people that referenced 5 by 5. Are we looking for 5 for 5 by 5? The 555 Simpson Lawrence has been mentioned twice. Anyone else want to mention it again? 505 has been mentioned twice.

I think the hahaha was the best answer.

Y'know, you're right! I was thinking 505, even though I found this sweetie listed under '555'.

Never mind...

Re: general query-meaning of 555?

My buddy Capn Ron has a pair of Cummins 555s powering his Santa Barbara 52. They are diesel v8's of rather generous proportions.

Cheap brand of stainless cookware found in Central America too (maybe named after the Thai usage? ;-) ).

Re: general query-meaning of 555?

With all the posts about electronic times, telephone numbers, Cummings engines ect. I have to stick with it predates all those things, in King James Bible the word Christ appears 555 times. I'm not an expert on this but a simple google search came back with mostly religious hits.
