free SCI-FI ebooks

So being an ardent SCI FI reader (I've read 2-3 books a week for the last 40 years, among other things) I was searching for new Ebooks on B&N and Amazon. How odd, not hardly any, like almost none of the good authors..

Pondering the lack of good sci fi ebooks, I went to Baen.com which is a major publisher of SCI FI. OHHHHHH.... Look there are all the new ebooks, with prices much better then Amazon or B&N.

But wait there's more. BAEN has a "FREE" ebook section with many of 3-6 year old sci fi available for download for Free. Looks like all major ebook formats are covered too.

I am in Nerdvana. Nothing better then Free SCI- FI to a poor sailor chic.

Plus looks like BAEN has all their sci fi books available for purchase online and downloadable for not a lot of money.

Well Alrighty, I've got my ereader loaded for another 2-3 weeks of reading without breaking the bank. Love free books. Even better then a free boat!!

Of course there is project Gutenburg too for the classics.

Yes, the Baen giveaways are great. Check out the Honor Harrington series by David Weber. He has the first couple of them free to get you hooked. Also his book "Apocalypse Troll" is pretty good.

You mean real sci fi and not dragons and swords and wizards? I'm headed there now!

I've already read all the weber books. Apocalypse Troll was fun as was On Bailisk Station.I did however download both to read again as its been a few years.

I've also read all the Ringo books and all the Alastair Reynolds book. Reynolds Books are the best I've read. My all time favorite is The Prefect...

Like I said, I read a little..... when I'm not going that sailing thingy....

Well they have dragons etc too. But Baen does the best hard sci fi around... Not enough for sure. Though I enjoy a good sword and dragon book too

Re: free SCI FI ebooks

The Baen stuff is indeed really good. Love all those free downloads!

Try Eric Flint's 1632 and 1633 if you are interested in alternative history. He does great military sci fi as well.

David Drake is similar to John Ringo - both great military sci fi. Ringo does some interesting fantasy/military stuff as well. Drake has done a number of space operas based on classical history.

SM Stirling's stuff is a treasure too. His post-apocalyptic "Dies the Fire" series
is pure fun. The rebuilding starting in Portland OR and the Willamette Valley is neat if one has spent time there. He has novels set in Mars and Venus that are neat.

Agree that David Weber's Honor Harrington series is superb.

Use your local library too!

Yes read SM Stirlings and Drakes books too. Librarys are a problem for folks with just a PO box. No utility bills either. My one down side for being a sea gypsy. Have not been a big fan of Flints, wierd I know...

Well they are actually listed as fantasy. But generally listed with Sci Fi. Also urban fantasy, some good, a lot not so much. If I read another zombie /vampire book I'll be sick.

Yes I have a reading addiction. SCI Fi, fantasy, sailing and engineering. Boring girl I know...

Re: free SCI-FI ebooks

I am with ya Sailorchic - zombies and werewolves don't float my boat. Ha ha. Enjoy history, but sci fi is my weakness.

Love to read. Great break after working on a boat project, best way to be on watch offshore in the trades - self steering, read a few pages, look around, back to the book...

You can borrow Webber's books from the public library. Some of them come with a CD with the whole collection, I've copy them to my PC

Sounds like fun to me.

Maybe I'm just boring too!
