Particulalry as you get older building or maintaining muscle becomes hard and the usual outdoor activities won't leave you with a balanced structure unless you are doing swim sprints or 'yak sprints and such.
A. I'mnot young.

B. Obviously this depends on the level of vigor and variety. Get vigorous!

I'm 52 and a long time triathlete, better swimmer than runner. When I train on the bike I do some hard pulls in a big gear for a strength workout, and do the same for swim workouts, but still need some weights to be healthy and not look like a Kenyan marathoner. Although that would be faster...

Re: Fitness

I've been a little heavy for my whole life. But when I bought the boat and went south, I lost twenty pounds in the first month.. It was because I started spending 3 or 4 hours swimming every day. Swim fins make hard muscles in your legs and do exercise almost all the muscles in your body. when I came home every year I would put it back on in a couple months. I did that for 10 years. Mac

Re: Fitness

Hello! Gemini 34 owner here.
I have the same concerns about fitness as I make a long term plan for cruising in the next few years.
For cardio you may want to check out "seated exercise pedals" on Amazon. There are many different options based on budget and fitness level. I plan to get one if my cruising plans take off. I've also planned resistance bands for arms and legs. I'm still exploring abs and a replacement for my beloved yoga ball.

Re: Fitness

On a Gemini bring the ball with you!
Abs are easy. Suspend yourself (I use my whisker pole and a pair of rings) and do leg lifts. If you YouTube barstarz or something like that you'll find a number of routines from the gym playground crowd.
I couldn't load up enough resistance bands without snapping them to get a good squat. Single legs are great but an old injury in my left knee means I'm still working it back into shape.

Re: Fitness

1)Go sailing
2)Stand up
3)Turn off the autopilot

If that's not enough turn on some lively music.

And if that's not enough take a look at the bottom of this thread and you should see a number of links to fitness threads. Use the "google custom search" instead of the useless other one.

We are moving onboard and cruising indefinitely soon, we've adjusted from gym workouts to kettle bell routines at home that we will continue...but on a beach instead of a garage.

Re: Fitness

Hi every one with concerns about fitness, I mostly only read here But I do travel a lot to work in other countries, I am not sure if it would work on a sail boat, but I take a crosscore with me to work all the time, It give a good work out, using your body weight, I was lucky enough to try one in Iraq when I was there,, Muscle development is great, Uses your body weight on cables, very small to store, Easy to pack with you, It was developed for the USA armed forces, I would not be without it now, I am 56 years old, I find it to be a great piece of equipment, And yes swim, row, enjoy, I am getting closer to join you people out there every day,
Terry

Follow my flipboard mag 'Fitness on a Boat'.

I'm finding the madbarz app to be great. That and 4 mile runs a couple of times a week.

Doing something everyday is the key.

Re: Fitness

People have mentioned hitting the gym when you're anchored somewhere for an extended period, but (assuming it's a decent size) you can workout on board as well! Yoga doesn't take much space, and if you store a few lighter weights you can do a ton of different workouts as well.
