First Breakfast!

We sold it all -- our company, our cars, our condo in downtown, and stuff. And a few days ago my wife and closed on and moved aboard our final boat (we hope it's the final boat). Every day we've been busy from wakeup to bedtime, and so far we've eaten only one meal a day just for lack of time. Having been a weekender / vacation boater, I can say that living aboard is far, far different. We have what is arguably an enormous boat for two people, yet we both feel like there is very little room to store stuff and move about. We're getting used to it daily, though.

And this morning I made our first breakfast aboard. We've had coffee daily, of course. Some things permit no compromise. But breakfast always seemed like a luxury, even when dirt dwelling.

So this morning I honored the Dutch sailors of the past, and one of my favorites of the modern era*. I made spekpannenkoek mit stroop -- Dutch-style pancakes with strips of bacon cooked into them, and sweet maple syrup. We are both quite happy. I think the cruising life is going to suit us well.

The first breakfast feels like the first real day as cruisers.

*Many times I've said that my favorite sailors are all women. Beth Leonard taught me how to sail around the world; Laura Dekker showed me that I can; and Tanya Aebi taught me why I want to. (As to the pancakes, well, strictly speaking, I suppose Laura Dekker is now a Kiwi. Though she was born Dutch.)

Oh my gosh, you are living now. Literally! I can't imagine not enjoying a big breakfast with friends on my boat. It's my favorite meal to make. Enjoy the cruising life

Congratulations, glad to see you're enjoying it so much. I was amazed at your pancakes, simply because I used to make waffles, made with minced ham-off-the-bone and chopped walnuts, served with butter and maple syrup to the at-the-time family. Lovely play of salt vs. sweet.

Yes, boats are weird, you can put a lot aboard them, but then they go slower. It is a trade-off that lingers in one's mind.
