A good cast, and a good story.
Hopefully a good movie!

I've been intrigued by the Crowhurst story since I was a boy, and have been eagerly awaiting this movie for several years. Looks like it's finally about to see the light of day :-)

Re: Film "The Mercy" (Donald Crowhurst Story)

All true, but what is this offering that wasn’t already covered in the original movie? I mean, if it was an inspiring, uplifting story, I’d say to hell with it and watch it again. But,
Mr Crowhurst’s story is a bona fide tragedy.

Dunno guys, the older I get, the less I feel like watching tragedies.

The remains of Teignmouth Electra are still visible on Cayman Brac. It is in a waste area 200 yds from the ocean.

I always thought it was a shame he killed himself. He could have ended up the Ronnie Biggs of sailing.
Donald really did achieve a lot in a fairly awful trimaran design.
Cheers

I saw a documentary movie on him....it was fascinating. You can find it on utube if you want the spoilers...

There's a novel that loosely based on his story call Outerbridge Reach. It's a very depressing book and screws with your head a bit...........not recommended for single hand sailors.

I’m sorry, I meant the 2006 documentary “Deep Water” which is available on YouTube.

I've watched Deep Water and its a sad tale of a man with a dream who allowed himself to be pushed into an impossible voyage in a boat totally unprepared/unsuited to the task ahead by his sponsor and a journalist.. and a delusion about himself as a sailor.
The others all had serious mileage under their belts before the race whereas Crowhurst was basically a day sailor in comparison.. he should have been stopped before he sailed.. even his wife says he was in tears the night before he left and regrets not stopping him then.

Re: Film "The Mercy" (Donald Crowhurst Story)

What I found almost as crazy as Crowhurst in this event, was Chay Blythe who, with no previous sailing experience at all, set off to sail around the world nonstop in a 30ft bilge keeler! I think he made it round the Cape of good Hope.

John Ridgeway was also in a 30 ft bilge keel yacht too if I recall.

What makes a blue water boat? Balls, I reckon.

Up to the mid nineties 30 footers were considered world cruisers. Then it had to be a 40 footer in the two thousands and now it seems like people wouldn’t almost consider anything less than 50 to be blue water capable...

Interestingly there was another recent movie, released late last year, simply titled "Crowhurst", even distributed by the same production company. I'd like to see it too, if only for curiosity/comparison purposes.
